Moves smoothly on the road
Very good on Gas. $20 a week!. I drive 36 miles to work per day. That totals 180 miles a week !. Very reasonable too!.
2002 Chevy Prizm
I bought it used with over 130,000 miles with only minor problems and the repairs are really affordable.
A Toyota Corolla in Bowtie clothing
I bought a 1999 Prizm because Consumer Reports magazine said that this IS a Toyota Corolla. GM (and remember GEO?) bought thousands of these cars from Toyota and re-badged them. Better yet, you can buy this car cheaper than a same year Toyota Corolla. Even the Haines Repair Manual for my Prizm says Toyota Corolla.
Carry extra quarts!
This car is using about a quart of oil a week. No signs of leaks. No noticeable blue smoke. This seems to be problematic to '01 and 02 Prizms
Extremely reliable car
This car is definitely comparable to the Toyota Corolla. I cannot tell the difference by looking at them. I also owned a Toyota and this Prizm handles just the same as the Toyota. It is a very peppy little car. I like it a lot!
Prismazing!
We bought our Prism as a first car for our 16 year old son. He wanted a manual transmission and learned to drive a stick after we bought the Prism. Our car had 70,000 miles on it when we bought it and I got a terrific price for it.
Good Car Until it Burns Oil Like Crazy
Let me start by saying this car has been reliable for most of its life. I bought it at 77,000 miles, and its still running at 191,000+. It is by no means a flashy vehicle, but when the engine ran at peak efficiency, it got close to 40 MPG and ran smoothly. But, at about the 130,000 mark, it started burning oil (1 quart every 1,000 miles or so).
PrizmGurl again
I reviewed the '93 Prizm, but since we have an '02, here I am. We had 2 '02's (both dark blue green metallic) but the stick one was totaled when my dad hit a snowbank after hitting another car with it. It had about 70,000 miles on it and the only non-maintenance mechanical repair it needed was a wiring problem and valves in the evaporation system.
The fixes
The car is best suited for a couple or parents with small kids. The front seats must be at their back position which leaves no leg room behind.
Great car
We purchased this car new in 2000. I do not have one bad word to say about this car. It has been a great little car. No problems what so ever. It is the best value for a car I have ever bought. If all US car maker made their cars of this quality, they would not be in the mess that they now are in. Bravo to General Motors for this car.
Great around-town car
The Prism is a great around town car, but NOT for traveling. I have 260,000 miles on my manual shift and lost 4th gear last September and I am still getting over 34 miles to the gallon. The throwout bearing went bad at about 220,000 miles and we went ahead and rebuilt the motor since it was out and was losing compression.
good performer
bought at automall end of 2000 it had been in a rental fleet for the year, only owner, it is an automatic transmission mostly city driving at around 28mpg but very good highway at 65mph only (you can drive 75mph) gets around 35/38 mpg never had one problem with engine or transmission never added oil once my self just had regular changes around twice a year but only drive highway for 6 hours round trip maybe twice a month or so....
Not as great as everyone says...
Needed a good car for school, thought the prizm was a good fit and bought one with only 40k miles on it. mpg is amazing on this car, getting 28-30 in the city! However, it consumes oil at an alarming rate (quart every 200m) so the saves equal themselves out.
Good Ol' reliable!
I've had my prizm for 13 years now. I have no trouble with it eating oil, as others have stated. The inner handles do break, however they are very easily replaced (under 5 minutes each) and if ordered online, very inexpensive (look for toyota corolla). Outer door handles break as well, the front ones aren't horribly difficult to replace.
