I think dark hard wood floors are lovely & wouldn't get too caught up in what is in style but rather what works in your space in terms of light (I.e., if you like dark wood and have a light space, go for it) & maybe even ceiling height. I don't have high ceilings and my light is limited, so I went with a light floor.
