History

In 1993 Nanny felted a pair of boots for the first time, and the wool used came from her Gotland sheep. The felted boots were well received among friends and family, so well, that Nanny started a small hobby production. This paved the way for the company Glerups.dk.

Design & materials

Glerups shoes, slippers and boots are known for their exceptional comfort. This is due to the foot-shaped and unique design combined with the softness and warmth of the wool.

Manufacturing with care

We use 100% pure and natural wool for all of our slippers. The slippers have either a sole of calfskin or natural rubber (except for the baby shoes, which have no outer sole).

From Farm to Foot

glerups started with wool from the family’s own Gotland sheep. But at glerups, we never stand still! They’re a legitimate outdoor option that could be used for the grocery store, movie theaters, travel days, what have you. A friend of mine once wore them on a light hike in Yosemite. They’re even year-round.

Do glerups mold?

Theat expertise has been evident since I first started wearing my Glerups a year and a half ago. I’ll probably buy a new pair next year, but only so I can have them in a different color. I can’t imagine needing to legitimately replace these anytime soon. That’s partly because Glerups mold to your feet as they “age.” The interior of the shoe naturally sheds fabric until it’s found the preferred shape of your arch and heel. Because of this, Glerups are actually at their least impressive during the first week of use. The design will seem odd and oblong to begin with — it’s sort of a propped-up oval of felted wool, with a sole somehow attached to it — but you just need to trust the process.

The weight of almost 500 grams is on the high side for backpacking but if you travel by car, bike or motorbike it should not be a problem. The Glerups Slip-on slipper is easy to put on and it is cuddly warm. What I do like about the felt is that after a year the sippers are still free of odors. The rubber outsole has proven to be the right choice for me. It provides nice grip on wettish and slippery surfaces, but it is not totally slip free. So take care anyway!

Is the Glerups slipper a full size?

The Glerups Slip-on slipper is only available in full sizes. Since I am a 41.5 (7.5 UK) I chose the 42. Smaller is never an option (expect for climbing shoes). The 42 fitted nicely but after a couple of months I noticed that the sizing is influenced by using. The size 42 has grown by a full 1 centimeter by now. In this respect it would have been smarter to choose one size smaller. The result is that I start squeezing my toes to prevent the slipper from moving and that is not too comfortable.

Is calf leather chrome free?

The calf leather is from a European tannery that works according to European legislation, but that does not mean it is chrome free. Glerups states on their website that in the tanning process chrome is used but not the very harmful Chrome6. Also no PCP’s and AZO dyes are used.

What are the best slippers for overheating feet?

If your feet overheat easily or you want a more-minimalist-looking slipper, we recommend the Glerups Wool Slippers Open Heel and the Glerups Wool Slipper Boots . They were the most durable of the wool slippers we tested because they’re made from one piece of felt, which means they are less prone to splitting or degrading with repeated wear. We recommend the slippers for year-round use, and we suggest the boots if you want full coverage around the ankles. Both are also available in rubber-soled versions ( open heel, boots ). Buying Glerups through L.L.Bean will give you the best satisfaction guarantee. But if you want more color options, Huckberry carries a slightly different selection.

What are vegan slippers made of?

The L.L.Bean Sweater Fleece Slipper Scuffs ( women’s, men’s) are an excellent vegan option. Instead of leather or wool, they’re made of polyester Polartec fleece, and in our testing they kept our feet warm and cozy. Plus, the Sweater Fleece slippers have a rubber outsole, so you can wear them to walk the dog or run to the mailbox. We didn’t find them as breathable or durable as either the Wicked Good Moccasins or the Glerups slippers. But if you want to avoid using products made from animals, these slippers are a cozy and inexpensive option.

L.L.Bean’s Wicked Good Moccasins ( women’s, men’s) beat out every other slipper we tested, due to their combination of comfort, durability, and reasonable price. We also like that they come with a durable outsole for quick jaunts outside. These are a favorite among reviewers, and they’re a particularly good choice if you want a fuzzy and cozy slipper.
