Pessimism involves looking at the world in a way that emphasizes negativity (think of the “glass half empty vs. half full” cliche), whereas, realism is more about truth and objectivity — not necessarily seeing a situation as bad, just seeing it as something to be dealt with.

Once our troops eventually discovered these camps and rescued prisoners, the ones who made it (long term) were often realists. For a pessimist/realist no matter which way a situation turns out we don’t feel affected negatively. We have low expectations and find that we were either right from the beginning and feel content or we were wrong and feel pleasantly surprised by the outcome. There you have it. For the record…my current theory is that realists are pessimists who don’t want to call themselves pessimists. Most leaders (not all, but most) are optimists when they start out. I was. I’m an idealist. But as you may have discovered, your optimism gets tested—really tested—in leadership.
