The flue terminal is about 850 mm long and is normally cut shorter when installed. If yours exits behind the boiler then all that is likely to be needed is a new terminal. Otherwise if 850 mm is not long enough then an extension can be fitted to lengthen the existing terminal unit. At least you have a modern boiler so all the parts are available.

Boiler flue extensions are used to extend a boiler's flue outlet system, effectively an additional flue length of either horizontal or vertical orientation. Flue extensions are brand specific and must be the same brand as the manufacturer of the flue piping system that is being extended.

Can a boiler flue pipe be extended?

I guess subject to boiler flow, the pipe can be extended vertically or horizontally Naturally I will get an engineer in to specify and fit a flue extension but in the meantime, I can't find a definite set of regulations which specify how flues can be run internally within a confined space.

What are the flue regulations for boiler flues?

Flue regulations are not only in place to keep your home safe but the people passing by your property too. If your boiler flue has to face out onto a public space, the installer will have to ensure that it’s fitted at least 2.1 metres above ground level, over head height.

What does the flue do on a gas boiler?

The flue is designed to remove water vapour, carbon dioxide and even carbon monoxide gases away from the boiler and property and therefore must also be maintained to ensure that it is functioning correctly.

How far should a boiler flue be from a window?

Location. Under the boiler flue position regulations, the flue has to be positioned a certain distance from any parts of the home that can be opened up such as windows and doors. How far this is will depend on the size of your boiler but is typically between 30-60cm above, below or to the side of an opening.

How long can a gas boiler flue be?

10 metresAs a general rule, a flue should work effectively when it's up to 10 metres in length. This is usually based on a standard thickness of 60/100mm. For flues that need to be longer than this, it's a good idea to increase the thickness to 80/125mm to ensure that the gases are able to escape easily.

Can I extend my combi boiler flue?

All of Baxi's, Main's and Potterton's system or combi boilers with a 60/100mm concentric flue fitted can be up to a maximum length of 10 metres. If you find that you do need a longer flue run, then the flue size can be increased to 80/125mm, giving you a maximum flue length of up to 20 metres.

How far can you vent a boiler?

between 30-60cmUnder the boiler flue position regulations, the flue has to be positioned a certain distance from any parts of the home that can be opened up such as windows and doors. How far this is will depend on the size of your boiler but is typically between 30-60cm above, below or to the side of an opening.

Does a boiler flue have to be straight?

Does a boiler flue have to be straight? Best practice is to install boiler flues that are as short and straight as possible to maximise efficiency. Nevertheless, some boiler models allow for longer boiler flues which sometimes require bends. The number of bends allowed depends on the length of flue allowed.

Can I move my boiler flue?

Do I need to get an engineer to move my flue pipe? Your boiler flue pipe is considered part of your boiler system and it is illegal and dangerous for anybody other than a qualified, registered engineer to make any alterations.

How many bends can a flue have?

four bendsIf bends are unavoidable, then there must be no more than four bends in the length of the chimney. A bend should be no more than 45 degrees from the vertical, with the exception that 90-degree factory-made bends or tees may be treated as two 45-degree bends.

Can a boiler flue run horizontally?

Boiler flues carry out the same job no matter whether they're installed horizontally or vertically. And that job is to release waste gases produced by the boiler ensuring they don't leak into the home.

What are the rules on boiler flues?

Boiler flues should be positioned at least 75mm below any material that could be damaged by heat, such as guttering. They should also be at least 150mm to the side of vertical drain or soil pipes. The waste gases expelled from the flue can be extremely hot, which could cause external damage.

Can a flue run horizontally?

Most flues are fitted horizontally, although it may be appropriate for flues to be placed vertically on some properties. If the boiler is not fitted to an external wall, for example, a vertical may be used to channel waste gases through and out of the roof space.

What is a flue extension?

A flue extension is an additional length of flue pipe added to a chimney. The flue is a pipe which leads from a furnace or stove to the outside of the building. Smoke, soot and dangerous gasses flow away from a fire and through the flue.

How far should a boiler flue protrude from a wall?

Typically this is around 30-60cm if it's to the side or above the opening, and a bit more if it's below. This is because the waste generated by combustion can include dangerous gasses like carbon monoxide, so you don't want that waste gas too close to an opening where it might re-enter the home.

Can a boiler flue be boxed in?

No person shall connect a gas appliance to a flue which is surrounded by an enclosure, unless that enclosure is so sealed that any spillage of products of combustion cannot pass from the enclosure to any room or internal space other than the room or internal space in which the appliance is installed.

What is boiler flue?

Definition: A boiler flue is a component which enables gas to escape safely from boiler. In most cases, this is a pipe or a duct, which is fitted to the boiler to carry exhaust gases away from your home safely. The aim is to remove waste products without exposing you or anyone around you to them.

Why is a boiler flue important?

A boiler flue is a simple mechanism, but one that is very important for your safety, but also that of those around you. As well as promoting health and safety, boiler flues are also required to ensure your heating system meets the required regulations.

What is the regulation for the location of a boiler flue?

1. Location. The location of the flue is key to protect you, as well as the people who live near you.

How does a flue work?

With a horizontal flue, the pipe travels straight through the wall behind the boiler. In cases where the boiler is not fitted to an external wall, a vertical flue may be installed. In this case, the flue goes upwards and then out through the roof.

What is a back boiler?

It is worth noting that back boilers are a dying breed because they are much less efficient than combi and regular boilers.

What is a horizontal flue?

With a horizontal flue, the pipe travels straight through the wall behind the boiler.

What size pipes are used for square flues?

Square flues are more common in older units, which may still be using 15mm pipes, rather than standard regulation 22cm pipes. If the pipes are old, they should be upgraded to meet current safety standards.

The picture shows the end of the flue from my boiler where it emerges from the garage. Not obvious from the picture, but it's at about head height and close to the side door of the house and so I often get a faceful of fumes when entering or leaving.

What is boiler flue?

A boiler flue is a pipe or duct that’s attached to gas boilers which allows waste gases produced during the heating process to safely leave the building . You might recognise them as those black or white ducts that stick out of buildings expelling gas.

How far away from the window should a boiler flue be?

How far this is will depend on the size of your boiler but is typically between 30-60cm above , below or to the side of an opening.

What happens when a boiler is burning?

Temperature. The harmful gases are produced when the boiler is burning fuel, which means that the gas exiting through the flue is hot, so this needs to be taken into account when positioning the flue. Keeping it away from any plastic gutters as they could end up melting is one of the considerations to be made here.

What is a condensing boiler?

Condensing boilers are highly efficient units that have 2 internal heat exchangers meaning that less heat is lost through the flue. When a non-condensing boiler is replaced with a condensing boiler, the different flue arrangements could mean that the current flue has to be relocated.

Is a boiler flue dangerous?

The gases that the boiler flue disper ses outdoors are potentially harmful which is why the regulations surrounding them are getting stricter. Boiler flue regulations ensure that the gases being expelled don’t re-enter the home, which would instantly make the flue redundant.

Do boiler flues go out of the wall?

The majority of boiler flues exit out of a wall horizontally but if the flue from your boiler comes out at roof level then there are also some regulations that need to be considered. Typically, this applies when your boiler burns solid fuels.

Do you have to worry about a new boiler flue?

Remember that these regulations have been brought in for new installations so if your current boiler flue doesn’t meet them, you don’t need to worry. They will only apply when a new boiler is installed.

You can run it horizontal/vertical, just make sure it's accessible for inspection (flues in voids). Find the boiler manual and it's pretty straight forward what you can do regarding flueing.

With a Vaillant you can have up to eight meters straight horizontal, this reduces if you add bends and does not include the flue turret.

In fact, I have chust done that myself to my own flue - touch touch touch, rub, stroke, touch...

I'd have to agree with DA on this one, those flue's can be fitted in several positions, rear, left or right, just core though the wall to the left hand side as you face the boiler, fit new flue and job done.

You cant just stick a flue out anywhere you like, there are clearances that have to be adhered to. The best thing the OP can do is get a Gas Safe to have a look and advise him from site, and not get a load of speculation from an internet forum, no matter how well intended, none of us can see what he intends to do.
