Is it possible to hook up a starter backwards?

I have a 98 300ex and the starter is turning backwards. It is not possible to hook it up backwards cause there is only one wire going to it. I tried to unhook it and just run a wire from the battery straight to the starter and it turns backwards.

Do all starters turn the same way?

keep in mind. not all starters turn the same way. they do make some that turn backwards from others. most of these are on older atv's. i bet the first owner got the wrong starter from the get go. and wired it up so it would run backwards. but. like i said. if you reverse the battery leads comming from the battery.

How does a reverse starter work?

They're normal starters, they just engage the flywheel from the opposite direction. I have seen some reversible brush type motors that have the brushes on a carrier that can be rotated to change the timing. They shift the brushes about 40 degrees or so and that makes the motor run backwards.

Do marine engines use reverse rotation starters?

Some automotive engines (many Ford V8s and probably Chevy/Chrysler too) were used in marine applications... They had reverse rotation camshafts and hence ran counter-clockwise... so they must have used a reverse rotation starter too.

(Counter-clockwise) rotation starter drives a C.W. (Clockwise) rotation flywheel as viewed from the engine rear.

Are starter motors reversible?

Both AC and DC motor starters can be reversing starters and can be used with single phase and three phase motors. In reversing motor starters there are separate contactors and circuits for each direction that allow the motor to go in forward or reverse.

Should a starter spin both ways?

No, it rotates only one way.

What causes a starter to spin and not engage?

In general, a starter that is spinning but not engaging can be caused by a faulty starter clutch, a weak car battery, sticky starter solenoid contacts or if the starter motor bendix is not catching the flywheel.

What is a reversing starter?

A reversing starter is designed to reverse shaft rotation of a 3-phase motor. This is accomplished by interchanging any two-line conductors that supply the motor load. The reversing magnetic motor starter features a forward and a reverse starter as part of the assembly.

Are starter motors polarity sensitive?

Starter motors are not polarity sensitive. If you contemplate changing the ground from positive to negative on an older car, the areas you have to be careful on are the aftermarket parts like tachs and radios.

Should a starter motor spin freely by hand?

A starter that is bad mechanically will make ugly noises when spun up and not attached to anything. If it spins freely when not under load, and all the connections were good on the car, chances are the windings or brushes are bad.

Can you rotate a starter solenoid?

When replacing a starter, it may be necessary to rotate the drive housing to match the solenoid position of the original starting motor. Before you begin, make sure the solenoid position is horizontal or above horizontal when mounted to the engine.

When testing a starter motor overrun clutch is it supposed to turn in both directions?

Technically, the overrunning clutch transfers torque only in one direction. The overrunning clutch then permits the driven shaft to keep rotating even when you stop the driver.

How do I know if my starter is misaligned?

Remove the starter from the vehicle and energize it with jumper cables to determine if the starter drive is properly moving the pinion gear into the cranking position. If the starter engages and cranks the engine, then skips and spins freely, there are two likely causes: Misalignment of the replacement starter.

Why does tapping a starter make it work?

This works because the brushes wear out which results in an inadequate electrical contact. By gently tapping on the back of the starter with the hammer, the brushes are knocked back into place so they can make contact one more time.

Can a dead cell battery make a starter whiz?

Agreed, and if they check out good, have the battery tested. Many places will do it free. It can have a dead cell and still make the starter whiz pretty fast, but not good enough to engage the gear and crank the motor.

Is a starter motor polarity independent?

Starter motors are polarity independent. They run the same direction with polarity reversed. The Bendix will fool many people because it appears to turn one way while being driven by the starter motor turning the other way.

Where are the starters on a reverse rotation marine engine?

The reverse rotation marine engines I've seen have the starters mounted in the bellhousing facing forward instead of mounted to the engine facing back like normal. They're normal starters, they just engage the flywheel from the opposite direction.

How to reverse starter motor?

Starter motors are series wound. The only way to reverse them is to take them apart and rewire them.

How many degrees does a reversible brush motor shift?

I have seen some reversible brush type motors that have the brushes on a carrier that can be rotated to change the timing. They shift the brushes about 40 degrees or so and that makes the motor run backwards. No rewiring necessary and no switching wires around.

Did Chiefy ever say he wanted to use a starter?

He never said that he wanted to use this starter on an engine. I mean, why would you ever want to spin the engine backwards at the flip of a switch? My guess is that he's up to some more booty fab and is trying to adapt a starter moter to his "contraption". But then again... this is Chiefy we're talking about so who knows.......

Can you reverse polarity internally?

As far as I know, that's the only way to do it. Now, you could reverse the polarity internally, but it would still be the same thing.

Does a starter motor have a ground terminal?

How to reverse a starter?

the other way to reverse a starter is like shadetree said, hook the battery up backwards. when replacing the battery make sure to buy the correct one, a YTX14L-BS battery (and its aftermarket variants changing the Y from Yuasa to any number of brands) is the same as a YTX14-BS battery in every way except for one important factor, L in the battery number means LEFT SIDE NEGATIVE POST. This is another common way to accidentally reverse the polarity of a machine by simply installing the wrong version of the right battery correctly.

Why does my YFS200 blaster run backwards?

one other way that is really comical as a side note, if you kickstart a yamaha YFS200 blaster and its in reverse, its because the flywheel key partially sheared and makes the engine RUN backwards.

Can you hook up a starter to a battery?

yes ..you can hook up the starter backwards..been there..done that !..if you put the neg on the starter pos post..and pos on the neg to the battery..it will make the starter turn backwards..make sure your lead that hooks up to your battery is on the pos side of the relay...and the other lead goes to the pos side on the battery..and your neg is on the frame/ground..and like helmut said..it can be that your one-way starter bearing behind the flywheel is bad..i kinda doubt it though..but...it does happen..first rule out which way your starter is turning by making sure your battery leads are all hooked up right..then if all thats good..you either got the wrong starter..or your one-way bearing is bad behind the flywheel.

What does B stand for on a timing mark?

I think you are looking at the timing mark backwards. "B" is for advanced and "A" stands for after TDC. Just look at the fan blades while the engine is turning. The fan should be pulling air through the radiator.

Should the left side post be grounded?

1st....the left side post should not be grounded. It goes to the coil to give 12 volts while starting.#N#Never heard of a starter changing direction. Don't know if the windings shorted out, if it might change direction. Anyone else?

Can a permanent magnet motor rotate backwards?

First, only a permanent magnet starter could rotate backwards, one with field windings will always turn in the same direction because the field polarity is changed with the reverse current. If it is a permanent magnet motor, as stated the bendix wouldn't engage. You are apparently interpreting the rotation incorrectly.
