What is AIDS? AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. Acquired – means that the disease is not hereditary but develops after birth from contact with a disease-causing agent (in this case, HIV). Immunodeficiency – means that the disease is characterized by a weakening of the immune system.

Can HIV be passed down from parents?
An HIV-positive person can transmit HIV to their baby any time during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. But that doesn't mean that you can't have children. Treatment with a combination of HIV medicines (called antiretroviral therapy or ART) can prevent transmission of HIV to your baby and protect your health.
Can a human be born with HIV?
Congenital HIV is the result of the virus spreading to babies born to, or breastfed by mothers infected with the virus; however, not every child born to an HIV-infected mother will acquire the virus.
How long can a person born with HIV live?
By the time of 2 years of age, the mortality rate for children infected with HIV is 52.5% (children without HIV are only 7.5%). According to some HIV experts, if an infected child does not receive antiretroviral treatment early, it is unlikely to live until the age of 1.
How is HIV not passed?
By mosquitoes, ticks, or other insects. Through saliva, tears, or sweat. By hugging, shaking hands, sharing toilets, sharing dishes, or closed-mouth or “social” kissing with someone who has HIV. Through other sexual activities that don't involve the exchange of body fluids (for example, touching).
