If you want a humane way of removing Quail from your garden, you can always try to trap them. Quails are very fast, and they can also fly a short distance. This can sometimes make it more difficult to trap them. The only effective way to capture these birds and by cornering them slowly.

Natural Bird Repellent

Using a natural bird repellent has also been known to be effective. There are many options of bird repellent spray that you can make at home. One of the best known is a spray mixture of vinegar, chili peppers, and water.

Quails: plus or minus in my garden?

We think that some quails are starting to build a next in some ornamental grasses near our front door. For the last several days, as we walk out the door, a quail or two bursts out from under the clump of grass and runs down the road. Are they friend or foe in the garden? my dog likes to chew on the grass (pennisetum) whenever she gets a chance.

How to keep birds from digging up hardware domes?

That sounds crazy! They dig up and around the hardware mesh domes? You might consider building a garden box frame tall enough for you to work in and that can be covered with chicken wire but with large squares to let pollinators in. Maybe buy a steel frame carport ( the kind that have plastic tarp coverings) and use that frame to drape the bird netting on. A frame of some sort can also be used with shade cloth to help cut down on too much heat in Arizona. Do you have a cat that can help patrol for the pesky birds?

Can you live with dogs outside in Phoenix?

Housing dogs outside is generally frowned upon in Phoenix in the summer. That being said, dogs come with their own set of maintenance requirements that I don't think I'm willing to trade for a garden. I would prefer something with a non-recurring cost!

Do quail eat new sprouts?

The local quail covey (about 25 birds or so) devours new sprouts every day. I will explore the garden in the morning and notice all the new sprouts, and by evening they are moved to ground level. They also dig and take dust baths in the relatively soft and easy-to-work-with soil, creating huge divots everywhere and spreading soil and debris outside the beds. (I am positive it is the quail and not some other pest; I see them do it nearly every day)
