If you honestly believe the existing gloss to be sound then I would imagine it to be ok although some more recent gloss paints are water based and I'm not sure how a "proper" oil based gloss would fare over the top.

right. you can't gloss on top of gloss if it's old, as gloss is shiny and theirs nothing for the paint to adhere to, that's why an undercoat is req even if the gloss work is good. however, if you have just glossed a new piece of wood, you may put another coat on top as the paint has not cured yet. give it a key though.
