I'd suggest alu ladders, but before that, see if you can take off the grey plastic caps? You should see an I shaped bar that runs along the joints towards the wall.

18 or25mm sheets of ply would be OK, provided you can tether them to the wall adequately of course. Though a proper professional would only use scaff.

I realise the correct way to do this would be scaffolding but was hoping that the 25mm 8x4 sheet that I've got would spread the load enough to do what is an hours painting and save me the additional cost of the scaffolding.

Scaffold is the correct way but if you are set on using a board and short ladder, as said secure the board to the wall and screw a good sized batten across the board for the ladder to foot against.

Phil - that looks ideal!! Thank you so much for taking the time to find that. I'm hoping its not solvent based as i have just found out that the panels are in fact polycarbonate. Off to try it with my 10% off voucher!
How hot is a conservatory?
It works. Before conservatory would be 10-15° hotter than outside (with the doors open) now it's about 3-4° hotter than outside temp . Amazing.
Does UV paint cut heat?
It is darker inside and has cut the glare completely. I also cut shower curtains in two and hung them at the windows with suction hooks. With the UV paint it's a different usable room now.
Does the paint in the conservatory survive the summer?
UPDATE: The paint survived the summer and has done a great job keeping the conservatory from becoming an oven. I hope it lasts for next summer too, but I won't be too sad if we have to re-apply it because it has made the room habitable.
