Yes your right, but by adding hardener it makes a better finish with more resistance to UV and weather damage. I have used straight Tremclad, and even Home Hardware rust paint on outdoor things like mail boxes, steel lawn ornaments, they all still look darn good a few years later. I have not polished waxed, or even washed these items.
