Can I fire a HPS bulb on a metal halide ballast?

I have a few unused horticulture pendants that run a 150w HPS bulb. I know that most HPS bulbs can be fired on a metal halide ballast, it just hums and is bad for bulb life. Im wondering if using a MH bulb on a HPS ballast would have the same effect? PLEASE HELP!!!!

What is the difference between a halide lamp and a HPS?

So as a result the Halide Lamp ONLY requires the open current from the ballast which is usually around 600v in a magnetic ballast whilst the HPS requires the charge from the igniter to be sent to the lamp before the normal operating current can be "applied" .

What is the ignition current of a 400 watt HPS ballast?

However the ignition current in a 400w HPS ballast for instance, is over 2.5kv this is over 4 times what the Halide lamp is rated to handle.

Can I use a lamp with HPS sodium gear?

Whilst you can stick the lamp with the HPS sodium gear you will not get the correct colour temperature due to lamp not being at correct operating temperatures, and you will drastically shorten the lifespan of it. Stick the HPS stuff in the bin and invest in an icecap!!!! Craig is absolutely correct.

Can you use a HPS bulb on a metal halide ballast?

The primary visual difference between them is that metal halide light is white and the light emitted from a High Pressure Sodium bulb is amber orange. These bulbs cannot be interchanged without changing their ballast, the regulating element in all light bulbs.

Can I use the same ballast for MH and HPS?

Yes, you're allowed to change your mind—at least when it comes to MH and HPS lighting. Although the two fixtures use what are normally incompatible ballasts, conversion bulbs will let you switch lighting types. Some conversion bulbs allow MH light to work with HPS ballasts, and others let HPS work with MH ballasts.

What is the difference between MH and HPS bulbs?

MH lamps provide a more natural appearance in color and are typically the choice for plants that have little to no natural light available. High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps provide more yellow/red spectrum, which is ideal for most plants that are actively fruiting and flowering.

Is MH better than HPS?

Ironically, most HID grow light enthusiasts recommend using both MH and HPS grow lights. MH grow lights (metal halide) are suited best for vegetative growth and HPS grow lights are superior for flowering.

Are MH lights hotter than HPS?

MH lamps are hotter than HPS lights. This is a critical element you need to keep in mind when heating and cooling your grow room.

Can you use HPS for the whole grow?

MH (Metal Halide) bulbs are perfect for the vegetative stage and HPS (High Pressure Sodium) bulbs are perfect for the flowering stage. Either one can be used for the whole grow, though most growers who choose just one opt to use HPS for the whole grow.

What are MH bulbs used for?

Uses. Metal-halide lamps are used for general lighting purposes both indoors and outdoors, such as commercial, industrial, and public spaces, parking lots, sports arenas, factories, and retail stores, as well as residential security lighting; automotive and specialty applications are further fields of usage.

Is HPS better for flowering?

HPS lamps emit a lot of light in the red spectrum, which improves the flowering stage, and more than average light in the blue spectrum, which is beneficial during the growth cycle of the plants. This is where LED lamps stand out.

Is HPS best for flowering?

The color of light from an HPS is perfect for promoting flowering, but the color is also unmistakable, and that might be its greatest weakness.

Why do metal halide bulbs explode?

Metal halide (MH) lamps can explode (typically referred to as sudden nonpassive failure) because they operate at high pressures, but some products are manufactured with safety features to prevent injury.

Can I use both LED and HPS together?

The way HPS lighting should be installed is so that the light overlaps so shadows are reduced, and light penetrates in a horizontal direction. Having a mix of both HPS and LED lighting provides an ideal distribution of both diffuse and directional light.

Can I use a HPS bulb for veg?

In response to the general question, can you use an HPS bulb for veg, the answer is yes.

What bulb is best for flowering?

Our pick for the best overall grow light is the GE BR30, This balanced-spectrum bulb offers high-quality lighting that encourages houseplants, indoor gardens, cacti, and flowers to flourish every month of the year.

What HPS bulb is best for flowering?

HPS Spectrum Output HPS bulbs emit a golden-yellow light that is specially good to maximize budding and flower production.

Is HPS better than LED?

Essentially, we're talking about different technologies and calling them both “HPS.” LEDs are much the same. Though they're generally more efficient than HPS (with some clocking 2.8 µmol/joule), some LEDs are less efficient than high-quality HPS fixtures, and they give you less light.

Can I use a HPS bulb for veg?

In response to the general question, can you use an HPS bulb for veg, the answer is yes.

How many parts should a ballast have?

actually i think you can. The ballast should have 3 parts, the coil (ballast), ignigtor, and capacitor? I think you just need to get rid of one and it will work.

What is the difference between a halide lamp and an HPS lamp?

You are also risking a fire by doing this! The primary difference between these two lamps is that the Halide is constructed with an ignition chip inside the lamp while an HPS is not thus it needs an igniter at the ballast.

How much current does a 400W ballast have?

However the ignition current in a 400w HPS ballast for instance, is over 2.5kv this is over 4 times what the Halide lamp is rated to handle.

Can HPS bulbs be fired on metal halide?

Can you use a mogul socket with a capacitor?

If by fixture you mean Mogul socket and reflector then yes. But if your thinking of using the ballast and capacitor with the igniter removed then no.

Do conversion bulbs work?

Yeah conversion bulbs work pretty nicely but they do have some downfalls. The two most notable are an increase in heat output which equates to wasted electricty and a decrease in actual wattage.
