Speedfit fittings can be connected onto chromium plated copper pipe if the chromium plating is completely removed to the full depth of the fitting. To ensure maximum grip, the fitting of a collet clip is recommended.

SPEEDFIT® pipes are ideal for retro fitting bathroom items such as concealed showers as the pipes can be hidden much more easily than copper. Note: It should be noted that these types of fittings should not be used with chrome plated pipes.

Should I use copper or Speedfit barrier pipe under walls?

Normally I would stick to copper, being the old fashioned type, but on this occasion, needing to connect a long run under walls and through joists, I used speedfit barrier pipe, connecting to copper pipe with speedfit fittings.

Can I use Speedfit® for central heating?

The loose one will be fine, or better still just leave it out cos it doesn't need one. It's a copper pipe.

You dont need the inserts in copper pipe... Just make sure you cut the copper straight and de-burr the ends...

It sounds like you didn't have the fitting pushed fully home, I strongly suggest that you turn off the water, open the taps to release the pressure and double check that you have pushed all your fittings fully home. If you are in any doubt, do it now and don't leave it to chance. I find that the end stops are hardest to push on fully BTW.

The inserts are not designed to be inserted into copper, different wall thickness, therefore could cause leaks ... They are designed to be a tight fit on the inside of the speedfit pipe.. They will be loose in a copper pipe..

With sincerest respect Saltire, how can the presence of a redundant insert in a copper pipe cause the fitting to leak? It would only serve to stop the pipe being pushed fully home by a few mm but the pipe should still be well past the main seal in the fitting.

I agree it is important the pipe be fully inserted, but something that shouldn't be, and doesn't fit properly, shouldn't be there...

Sure - reason being that it would do absolutely nothing. Not cause a leak, not stop a leak...

Why use copper pipe for gravity?

Using copper pipe also helps to maintain full bore on a gravity system , whereas using speedfit fittings on plastic pipe requires an insert, which possibly reduces flow. Problems started to appear after a year or so, due to verdigris building up on the copper pipe inside the fitting, causing the fitting to leak.

What is a speedfit grab ring?

Speedfit uses a metal teeth grap ring, as does other push fit brands. The main body of the grab ring might be plastic on many fittings, including Speedfit, but the built in teeth for to grab into the pipe are metal - some sort of stainless steel. It reacts with the copper pipe.
