I can't seem to get a straight answer. We want to use a tumbled travertine on the waterline of our pool. Some people say it's fine - we should use an epoxy based grout and will need to seal it periodically (every 1 - 2 years). Others say it will start to pit over time.

I would not use a porous, or pitted stone on a waterline, it would be very difficult to clean. Not just the algae, but the oils, and organic deposits on the tile would look unsightly over time.
