What Is Gouache?
Gouache is a water based paint and is most similar to watercolour. Gouache paint is quick to dry (much like acrylic), and can be worked back into when water is applied (unlike acrylic). You can paint thickly, but you can also paint very translucent, like watercolour.
What Famous Artists Used Gouache?
Probably one of the most famous artists to use gouache (and wonderfully too!), was John Singer Sargent, an American artist in the 19th Century who created gouache paintings such as ‘Bedouins’, 1905 – 1906, painted with opaque and translucent watercolour.
Why I Recommend Gouache Paint
I would certainly recommend painting with gouache because of the points above, and also because the finished ‘painted-matte’ result is exactly what I love about it.
Gouache Vs Acrylic Vs Oils – Whats the Difference?
The difference with gouache in comparison to oils and acrylics is that it’s water based – and is a form of translucent watercolour. In contrast, acrylic is plastic based whilst oils are oil based.
Gouache Recommended Materials : Brushes, Paper And Palettes
For my gouache paintings I personally use ‘ Royal And Langnickel ’ brushes. These come in a variety of sizes, and are very affordable. There not top-of-the-range, unlike some brushes, but they are reliable and nice to paint with. I don’t think you need top-of-the-range paint brushes for your brush set anyway.
How To Paint With Gouache
When starting out with any new painting medium, it’s good to start off with basic painting and building up from there. If you’re a complete beginner to gouache, I recommend getting used to the painting medium by experimenting on a piece of paper, and seeing how you get on with it.

What is Traditional Gouache?

Similar to its watercolor paint counterpart, you must mix traditional gouache with water before spreading it across a surface or canvas.

Gouache is a mix of simple and complicated. Its binder is a middle-ground between the oil-based and water-based binders.
Can Acrylic Gouache Replace Your Gouache?
If you typically use traditional gouache but are starting to become more and more curious about acrylic gouache, we absolutely recommend you try it.
What is Acrylic Gouache?
Acrylic gouache is a unique form of traditional gouache. Also called acryla gouache, the paint is opaque to provide more coverage. But the addition of an acrylic binder turns it from water-soluble to waterproof. This is the feature that attracts artists who love to layer and use vivid colors in their artwork.
Acrylic Gouache Drying Time
Artists can use watercolors and traditional gouache over and over, even after they’ve dried up in your palette. This is not the case with acrylic gouache. And if you are entirely new to this painting medium, it will naturally take time to learn exactly how much paint to use without wasting it.
What Surfaces Are Best for Acrylic Gouache?
When you use acrylic gouache, your surface options open up to a much broader range than with traditional water media.
Acrylic Gouache Techniques
Certain projects are perfect for acrylic gouache paint. Artists prize it for its lightfastness or permeance. It also boasts a permanent, matte finish and resistance to showing brush strokes, so is a favorite especially for professional artists and designers.
