How can I fix a radiator to a stud wall, when the timber isn't in line with the fixings on the back of the radiator (towel radiator)? Hanging from the plasterboard isn't something I want to do, nor is breaking open the wall to fix additional noggins. A wooden batten fixed horizontally into the studs would work, but obviously it wouldn't be very attractive.

If you must fix only to the p'board, then I agree with t'Crow - these fixings are nifty. They are miles better than 'toggles' because they don't move once fixed, and it's movement wot makes p'board fixings fail - once they start to move, they'll crumble the edges and the area around the hole will eventually collapse.

umbrella fixings as pictured above, fix hundreds of rad with them and they are fine. Dont over tighten as you can strip the thread, best to get the setting tool.

Dry friction resists relative lateral motion of two solid surfaces in contact. The two regimes of dry friction are 'static friction' ("stiction") between non-moving surfaces, and kinetic friction (sometimes called sliding friction or dynamic friction) between moving surfaces.

ok ok squeezation is a 'made up name' but the rest of it is gospel, take for instance a tower block, they are built on steel work, FBG hold them up, ( ferking big girders), but are they relying on the 3/4 bolts holding them up ?, NO they are relying on stiction, the 3/4 bolts hold them together, there's no load on them, other wise there'd be mulimillion tons held up by the bottom row of 3/4 bolts,.
