Is it time to replace your evaporator coil?
Can you Oversize an evaporator coil? If you oversize the evaporator coil a little, the air will spend more time in the vicinity of the coil, giving it more opportunity to transfer heat to the coil. You'll get both additional sensible and latent heat transfer (more capacity overall). Click to see full answer. In respect to this, what happens if your AC is oversized?
How much to install evaporator coil?
Jun 14, 2010 · The one correct statement is you cannot downsize the evaporator coil on a heat pump. Evaporator coils do not efficiency ratings or BTU capacities, they have nominal capacity ratings. The size/design of the coil will change the SHR (sensible heat ratio) the small the coil the greater latent capacity the larger the coil the greater the sensible capacity.
How to change an evaporator coil?
Sep 03, 2009 · It really just depends on the ARI coil match and the SEER rating that is trying to be achieved. Some equipment requires 1/2 and sometimes 1 full ton upsize of the coil. But, is is not a standard rule of thumb that has any accuracy. Our company has ARI matched coils that are ARI certified, and in some cases and ratings, upsizing is the norm.
How to determine evaporator coil size?
Feb 12, 2020 · Can you Oversize an evaporator coil? A standard, single-stage, evaporator coil and two-stage condensing unit cannot do this. This is because the evaporator coil becomes severely oversized when the condensing unit runs in low-stage.

Can you upsize the evaporator coil?
It always goes the same size or, in some cases, depending on the unit, it can go smaller but never larger. That's the evaporator coil, would be the same size or smaller than the condensing coil and the unit which is on the outside of the house.
Is a Bigger evaporator coil better?
For example, an evaporator coil that is smaller than the condenser coils might, in some cases, provide better dehumidification but it can't cool the home as well. On the other hand, an evaporator coil that's larger than the condenser coils will cool the home well but will remove little to no moisture from the air.Aug 30, 2017
Can I use a 2.5 ton condenser with a 3 ton coil?
The short answer is, you can't. A good tech might be able to get it to work with like a TXV, but you are going to be bottle-necked at the 3-ton. There is no way you will get 5-ton capacity after that.
Can you put a 3 ton condenser on a 4 ton coil?
The 3 ton evap with a 4 ton condenser, probably has the capacity of about 3.5 tons. With most of the 1/2 ton capacity being latent capacity. Rooms above an unfinished garage usually aren't as comfortable as the other rooms. A load calc would tell what size to put in.Dec 6, 2018
Should evaporator coil be larger than condenser?
Further to this explanation, in an ideal HVAC unit the two sets of coils are designed to match one another. The evaporator coil should be ideally sized to soak up the same amount of heat that the condenser coils are able to dump into the air outdoors.Jul 5, 2018
Do evaporator coils have SEER ratings?
A SEER is an energy efficient ratio for all HVAC units. If you have a SEER rating below 14, you may need to replace the entire unit and not just the evaporator coil. This is because you can't match an evaporator coil with a SEER 14 rating with a unit that has a rating of 13 or lower.
Can I put a 5 ton compressor in a 4 ton unit?
A 5 ton outdoor unit will not work with a 4 ton indoor coil and air handler or furnace. The freon won't boil off correctly.
Can I replace a 3 ton AC with a 4 ton?
Proper size is a must. There is no reason for you to install a 4 ton if you can use a 3 ton. The low stage isn't that much less than full capacity because of the unloading scroll systems.
What happens when the condenser is bigger than the evaporator?
For instance, if the condenser coil is larger than the evaporator coil, it will help in dehumidifying the house at the expense of cooling it. Conversely, if the condenser coil is smaller than the evaporator coil, it will remove no or very little moisture from the air.
Can I use a 5 ton condenser with 4 ton coil?
You do see 4 ton coils as an AHRI match on a 5 ton condenser. Usually though this is not the best match. Customer should get better dehumidification only if sized correctly. I think first it would be nice to know that both Trane condenser and coil are a match.
Can a 2 ton outdoor unit be installed with a 1.5 ton indoor unit?
A straightforward answer for your question would be YES.Apr 14, 2021
Does the air handler and condenser have to match in size?
The short answer is that a handler and condenser can be different brands and the unit will function properly.Mar 13, 2019
What are the advantages of upsizing the evaporator in an a/c split system?
I can't seem to locate a "black & white" answer. I would think lower amp draw, and head pressure for the condensing unit. For the evaporator, it would de-humidify, and cool more efficiently. As opposed, to match the system with a 1:1 ratio. I remember my ref. instructor mentioning this, but I don't have an exact reference. TIA
Why can't I find a black and white answer?
The reason you can't find a black and white answer is because there are many variables in play here, including the actual heat gain on the space compared to the capacity of the evaporator. On of tha main goals of oversizing the evaporator is to allow for longer run cycles and increased dehumidification.
Can an oversized evaporator cause short cycling?
The problem with this is that, if the "oversized" coil is too large, short cycling can result. Oversizing the evaporator can actually lead to increased head pressure as the condenser must now reject more heat from the system due to the increased "heat absorbing" capacity of the evaporator.
