I might be able to shed some light on this: A micro called the Railway Tavern in Brightlingsea, Essex (UK) did a smoked hop mild, that was very very drinkable. Still one of the best mild/rauchy beers I have ever had. rather than smoked malt - this was more tempered, lighter. a finer smoke.
