Cursive is a type of writing that most people learned in school. The purpose is to write quickly and legibly so that you don't have to lift your pen off the page, resulting in letters that are connected. Calligraphy involves drawing out the letters using specific strokes.

Learn the basics of calligraphy first

Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can pick up a calligraphy pen, watch a few YouTube or Instagram videos and be able to do calligraphy instantly. This won’t work as you are most likely just going to copy someone else’s calligraphy style.

Start with an easier form of calligraphy

Some forms of calligraphy are more difficult and may take longer to learn. These include Copperplate calligraphy, Japanese or Chinese Calligraphy. Start with an easier form of calligraphy. Once you have mastered this, you can move on to more challenging forms.

Practice, practice and more practice

Learning calligraphy is not an easy task. You will need to practice a lot. Practising means doing drills repeatedly until you have mastered a specific stroke or letter. Make sure to have a dedicated time to practice at least two to three times a week for an hour at a time.

Have your practice materials ready

Create a ring binder for all your calligraphy practice materials. This will help you keep all your drill sheets together, and you will be able to see your progress over time. Imagine what a boost in confidence that will be!

Use the right equipment

When you start, you can use anything you already have available, including a pencil, ballpoint pen or markers. As soon as you think calligraphy is a hobby you want to pursue more seriously, get better equipment.

Use social media to your advantage

Use Pinterest, YouTube and Instagram wisely. Some accounts are so good, they can be intimidating. Choose a few accounts to follow, but make sure these inspire you instead of overwhelming you. Save some pictures you can try to copy once you have gained some experience with calligraphy.

Use resources to learn

There are plenty of resources you can use to teach yourself calligraphy. These are:

1. Learn The Basics

To really understand the art of calligraphy, you’re first going to need to learn the basics. This means you’ll want to learn how to hold the pen correctly and how to apply the pen to give you certain strokes.

3. Browse Videos on YouTube

As mentioned earlier, Youtube is a great source to learn the basics of calligraphy fast, especially if you are learning to teach yourself calligraphy fast.

4. Join a Calligraphy Course

Sometimes, you may not find what you are looking for exactly on Youtube and that’s when calligraphy courses come in handy.

5. Use a Separate Journal for Calligraphy Practice

The first few calligraphy artworks you will do is probably not going to be anywhere near amazing but that’s absolutely perfect because you know why?

6. Focus On One Calligraphy Style

The best thing you could do when learning calligraphy fast is to focus on one area before you hop on to the next.

7. Practice Daily (Use Practice Sheets)

Learning a new skill fast on your own will only work if you do the work and this means you have to practice consistently. You have to allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them if you want to improve.

8. Take Breaks and Keep Practicing

It’s okay to miss a few days if you’ve been practicing daily however, be sure to never quit. It’s so easy to become defeated by our own self-doubt and negative self-talk that we may talk ourselves out of doing something we love.

The 5 Steps I Took to Teach Myself Calligraphy

First things first, it’s important that for the context of this blog post you understand the difference between hand lettering and calligraphy. And no, they are not necessarily the same thing.

STEP ONE

I learned cursive in grade school, and I continued to use it occasionally up until I started learning lettering & calligraphy. So once I decided I wanted to learn calligraphy, it was pretty easy to pick back up and remember the shapes and movements.

STEP TWO

Fake calligraphy is the bridge between basic cursive and calligraphy. It’s a necessary step that is going to make you understand the basic fundamentals of lettering and calligraphy.

STEP THREE

I think starting with brush pens is a great choice when learning calligraphy. With brush pens, you can learn how to transition from upstrokes to downstrokes seamlessly using one tool.

STEP FOUR

Finally, you’re ready to get into nib and ink lettering. Yes, it’s possibly to skip all the steps above and go straight to this – but I guarantee you that you’re going to get super frustrated and waste a lot of ink (expensive ink to boot). Nib and ink calligraphy, also called pointed pen calligraphy, is difficult.

STEP FIVE

Learning real brush lettering and watercolor lettering was a really important last step for me, just because I love the process and look of using a brush to create calligraphy. Paint brushes, though, are one of the hardest tools to control, which is why I chose to do this last.

OPTIONAL

Learning how to do iPad lettering was a fun addition to my lettering knowledge. I didn’t get my iPad until I had already taught myself steps 1 through 5 above, but it was a whole new challenge for me.
