With no need for thinning (Osmo Polyx Oil is supplied ready to use) all you need to do is stir the pot well and you can begin application. Apply the oil with a firm and fine bristle brush, dip it into the paint being careful not to overfill it and then brush it evenly along the wood grain.

Can I use Osmo oil outside?

I don’t use osmo oil outside for similar reasons. Although it does look awesome, you must apply additional coats and then re-coat it every year. They can’t claim “exterior protection” if the coating itself fails after such a short time, surly?

Can you dilute Osmo oil?

A litre of Osmo Polyx Oil will cover about 24 square metres per coating. Calculate the area that you need to finish using this guide - it is not advisable to dilute this product. Using too much will delay drying and may result in performance and aesthetic problems that are hard to resolve.

Can Osmo be thinned?

Is one coat of Osmo Oil enough?

The article never says one word about WATER ....in fact the only thing it mentions that would lead someone in that directions is the mention of WET/Dry Sandpaper. It never says to use water though...the WET is the Osmo itself sanded wet into the slurry which is then padded into the pores

Can you use a white pad to buff a slurry?

I've never tried the slurry technique, but everyone has their own finishing schedule! I prefer to buff the product in at a low speed with a white 3m 'cleansing' pad, let it soak, rub out excess, then buff it 'dry' with another white pad. With this technique you can achieve an incredible satin sheen!

Does Osmo Polyx oil smell?

Osmo Polyx-Oil is all those things. Made from natural vegetable oils and waxes, it does not off-gas or smell bad. It’s durable, easy to apply, and easy to repair. The secret to success with this oil is filling the pores first. Start the surface prep by sanding up to at least 220 grit.

How to use Osmo top oil?

I use Osmo top oil on kitchen worktops. All you do is prepare your surface, tip a little bit of the product on, then work it into the timber with a lint free cloth. There is a nack, you need to keep a wet edge and you need to be conscious not to apply too much oil. Give it a quick sand after the first coat (use wire wool and go with the grain), then apply again. Another thing you need to be conscious of is dust settling on the worktop before the oil is dry, but that is the same with any product. How long does it take to recoat Osmo Polyx oil?

It is available to buy in satin or matt finish. You can pick it up in a tint or clear and even an anti-slip. Recoat time is around 16-hours which is the same as most oil-based products.

What oil should I use on softwood?

I know there are a few issues with longevity outside, but as long as you stay on top of the maintenance, Osmo oil is still the best thing to use on softwood. It’s a no brainer for me.

How to apply Osmo finish?

Apply a thin coat of Osmo. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. If the finish tacks up, add more and spread it around. Wipe up any excess, making sure to go with the grain. Let dry overnight. Repeat steps 9 – 11 for a second coat. Scuff sand with an abrasive pad or a very high grit sandpaper between coats.

How to sand osmo wood?

I’ve outlined the steps here: Sand your piece up to 220 grit, making sure to raise the grain at 180. Add a thin coat of Polyx Oil with a cotton rag. Use some wet/dry sandpaper at 220 or 320 grit, and sand the Osmo into the wood. This should make a slurry.

Let dry overnight. Sand the surface with regular 150 grit sandpaper. If the wood grain is still open, sand back up to 220, and repeat steps 1 through 6. Is Clear Extra Thin the same as Fine Woodworking?

At this point, it’s pretty apparent that using the Clear Extra Thin is more or less equivalent to Fine Woodworking’s slurry method. Pieces 2 and 3 were almost identical in every way, even including how they responded to water rings. Assuming you want your final product to have that buttery-smooth feel to it, you’ll have to make a decision- do you want to spend the extra money for another can of finish, or would you rather save a few bucks and spend the extra time and effort in making a pore-filling slurry? That’s not something I can decide for you, although I will say that using the Clear Extra Thin sped up my total finishing time considerably.
