Do you need threaded holes in a cast iron machine table?
now! Woodworkers drill holes in wood all the time but hesitate when it comes to cast iron. Threaded holes in cast iron machine tables are just the solution you need for holding jigs and fixtures.
How common is thread stripping in cast iron nuts?
Thread stripping in a cast iron nut member that is properly designed is highly uncommon. 1) Looks like you need to take the change of thread form into account or else your stress analysis isn't given accurate results. Also as implied by Tbuelna part of the issue may be the radii reducing stress raisers.
Can you drill into cast iron?
Yes, you can drill into cast iron. Don’t forget to use cutting oil if you’re drilling five or more holes. Always use a clamp or vice when you’re drilling into any surface. Wear safety goggles, gloves, and clothing.

Can you tap a thread in cast iron?
Cast Iron isn't difficult to tap, but it's got to be done with a sharp tap. Lubricant is irrelevant if the tap is sharp and cuts freely - hence my comment about relief on the cutting edges. And lubricant won't make a dull tap cut, but it might help you rescue the tap out of the hole just as is begins to bind up.
Can u drill and tap cast iron?
Cast Iron: No coolant is recommended for drilling, oil is recommended for tapping.
Will self tapping screws go through cast iron?
Self-tapping screws are good for use with metals, various types of plastics (plywood, fiberglass, polycarbonates), and cast or forged material, like iron, aluminum, brass or bronze.
Can you thread ductile iron pipe?
In applications that require transferring or distributing potable water, the ductile iron pipe is typically the go-to choice of material. Why is this? The inside of ductile iron pipe threading is typically highly resistant to corrosion.
What kind of drill bit do you use for cast iron?
The best drill bit to use for cast iron is a cobalt bit with a 135-degree point angle. The angle is sharper than that on a conventional bit, making drilling faster and more accurate. Cobalt bits are brass-colored. As an alternative, you can also use a gold-colored titanium nitride bit.
What kind of tap do you use for cast iron?
Cobalt steel is harder and tougher than high-speed steel, so it helps increase tool life and it can be used to tap tougher metals such as cast iron, nickel alloys, austenitic stainless, and aircraft alloys. The round shank with square end makes this tap suitable for hand or power-driven applications.
How do you screw in cast iron?
If you need to attach something to it or you have to release pressure, you could be worried about breaking a drill bit. However, it's not as challenging as you might think. You can drill a hole through cast iron with any drill bit for metal. Cast iron is much more brittle than other metals and is easy to drill into.
Does heating cast iron weaken it?
It starts with heated metal that is air cooled. This simple act, if heated to an exact temperature range, can create a more pure, hard metal. It's often used to create steel that is stronger than annealing the metal, but also creates a less ductile product. So, heat can indeed make metal weaker.
Do you have to pre drill for self-tapping screws?
Self-tapping screws are used for all sorts of material including wood, metal, and brick. These screws cannot drill through metal and require a pilot hole to be pre-drilled before installation.

What is the difference between cast iron and ductile iron pipe?
The difference between traditional cast iron and modern-day ductile iron is the shape of the graphite. While cast iron has small flakes of graphite, ductile iron contains spherical graphite nodules. Because of the spherical shape of the graphite, ductile iron is often called spheroidal iron or nodular cast iron.
Is ductile iron stronger than steel?
While there is no large difference when it comes to tensile strength, ductile iron has the greater yield strength (40 ksi). Cast steel, on the other hand, can only reach 36 ksi yield strength. As the strength of ductile iron increases ductility decreases.
How do you drill holes in cast iron?
You can drill a hole through cast iron with any drill bit for metal. Cast iron is much more brittle than other metals and is easy to drill into. Start drilling slowly to prevent overheating and excess friction that can damage your drill bit.

How do you drill a hole in an iron?
Drill at a Slow Speed In general, it's a good idea to drill through metal using as slow a speed as possible using a drill bit for metal. Hard metals like steel and larger drill bits require even slower speeds. With a small twist bit (1/16 in. to 3/16 in.), you can drill through most metals at 3,000 rpm.
Is cast iron magnetic?
Yes, cast iron is magnetic. Iron is a magnetic metal because it has a large number of electrons that spin in the same direction.

Why is FG200 casting failing?
The failure is stripping of internal threads of part which made up of FG200 material casting. After analysis we found that it is due to the lower stripping strength of the casting material. But it has also been observed that the issue is only with metric bolts not the BSW. That is because of the higher thread height and pitch in BSW as compared to Metric threads of same dimension and material which actually results in more stripping strength in casting material.
What is a BSW thread?
British Standard Whitworth (BSW) is an inch based coarse pitch thread standard using a 55deg flank angle and a controlled root/crest radius. It is actually a pretty good thread form in terms of fatigue. But is no longer used much.#N#The closest metric thread form I can think of would be MJ type threads, which use a controlled root radius on the external threads. But this type of thread is primarily used in aerospace. Finding commercial bolts with this thread form might be difficult. Most standard fasteners also currently use a 60deg flank angle.
What type of tap is used for casting?
If you are producing the internal threads in your casting by tapping, one thing you might consider is using a roll forming type tap rather than a conventional cutting type tap. Roll forming taps are available in standard metric thread sizes up to about M18. Roll formed tapped threads typically provide better fatigue performance than cut threads in most materials, but I don't know about your FG200 cast iron. To use a roll forming tap, the only adjustment you might need to make is the drilled hole size.
Why threaded inserts in cast iron?
The other thing to look into is threaded inserts to reduce the stress in the cast parts . Helicoil are the obvious suggestion that springs to mind but there are other types.
Do threads get striped?
yeah, threads get striped in service after few months of working. Material is same as earlier means for BSW and Metric thread as well. Only the change was done in Thread system with same size of threads and bolts replacement.
Can you use engagement lengths as per the standard?
Concluding, in order to find the required engagement length you'd need to do this whole complex set of calculations yourself. You cannot use the engagement lengths as per the standard! And pls. be aware that even now (at least around here) there's still no final jugdement given as to all of the assumptions to be made. Again, the more for this anisotrope lamellar graphite low strength cast iron.
Can you use fine metric threading with grey cast material?
I'd not propose to use fine metric threading with a grey cast material as you use.
How to drill through cast iron?
Start with a slow speed setting. More speed = more friction, which means more heat. Slower drilling allows you to go through cast iron without dulling out your bits or over-heating your drill. You should never exceed 3000 RPM, though less than 1000 RPM is doable.
How to deburr a hole in a drill?
Once you’ve made the hole successfully, hold the trigger down, and slowly pull the drill back and forth in it. This process will deburr the hole, which means that it removes the metal debris that was left behind. Wipe down the surface with a dry cloth, then use a wet cloth, and repeat once more with the dry cloth.
What do you do with step bits?
Step bits are handy if you’re trying to drill a large hole. If you use one, make sure that you don’t go too fast; Otherwise, you could bore a hole that’s far too big. Keep an old rag nearby whenever you use a drill bit on any type of metal. You’ll have to wipe up the excess cutting fluid and the metal shavings.
How to make a dimple for a drill bit?
It’s always a good idea to mark the location, so you don’t go off course, but the indent also helps to guide the drill bit. Use a center punch and a hammer to make your marks. Attach the correct drill bit to your drill.
What drill bit to use for cast iron?
If you want to make the task even more manageable, reach for a black oxide drill bit. They’re durable, and you won’t have tons of metal shavings stuck in the cast iron when you’re done.
How to cut through a hole before drilling?
Before you begin drilling, you’ll need to prep all of your tools to cut through the material easily. Start by applying lubricant to your drill bits before using them. If you’re only drilling one or two holes, you don’t need to worry about lubing them. However, anything more than that calls for cutting fluid.
Why do you drill slowly?
Start drilling slowly to prevent excess friction, heat, and dulling.

I am now installing the shower drain... I have a cast iron drain with a threaded connection for the 2" drain pipe. I bought a threaded male ABS adapter, screwed it in the cast iron drain... It seemed like the threads were kind of sloppy against one another... and there is no tapered thread for things to mush up against each other.
hj Master Plumber
First, check the Gasoila can to see if it can be used with ABS plastic. If not, then it will melt the threads and it will not make any difference whether the threads were compatible or not.
Yersmay Writing, constructionDIY Member
Thank you HJ. Actually I called Gasoila and they said it's okay to use on ABS but not on PVC. I'm nervous about this threaded joint. Before it's installed, do you think I should take it apart and add some wraps of teflon tape, more Gasoila? Or will I make things worse?
Cass Plumber
While it is not customary dope the male threads and the female threads and screw it together. This should take care of any leaks. Be sure the threads are dry when applying the dope. Don't scimp on the dope.

I need to repair a stripped thread in cast iron. I tried a heli-coil in the past but it didn't work. I think a solid insert is better but I've read the key-serts aren't recommended for cast iron. It's a fine thread and I think 5/8" but I'd have to take the bolt out to measure.
Vetech63 Senior Member
I haven't been a fan of heli-coils ever but I haven't used a lot of them. Can it not be drilled to a bigger size and rethreaded?
Welder Dave Senior Member
It's for the bolt holding the center axle pivot pin in on an MF 135UK tractor. It uses a special shoulder bolt. I'd have to measure the size of the shoulder to see if it a larger bolt might work. The stripped part isn't very thick and from what I've read fine thread isn't the best in cast iron.
ianjoub Senior Member
I use time certs over heli coils. I have not heard about problems in cast iron, but I rarely work with cast iron...
Welder Dave Senior Member
I ordered some E-Z Lok inserts from where I work. They had good reviews and use standard taps and drill bits and no need for a countersink. You can also put them in just using a bolt and nut.
Max.bare.ridge Member
Cast makes this one tough. Be sure that you tap the hole out carefully and use some type of tap/cutting oil.
Welder Dave Senior Member
The E-Z Lok inserts come with a thread compound on them but some people have also used red Loctite. They're recommended for cast iron.
