It seems to me that if you already have a good current source (your TIG welder), turning it into a plasma cutter should be fairly easy. I would think all you'd need is an off-the-shelf plasma torch and air compressor. You'd need a method to trigger the air supply when you strike the arc, but that should be simple as well.

What is a TIG welder used for?

A tig welder is a type of welding equipment that uses a thin metal electrode to heat and melt the base metal being welded. It is used for both high-quality, high-strength joints and thin materials. Tig welding can also be used to join two pieces of sheet steel together without creating a joint in the center.

Can TIG welders be used without gas?

Without shielding gas, you simply cannot perform TIG welding. If you use no gas in TIG welding, your tungsten electrode will be disintegrated due to the lack of protection from the gas. Thus, the shielding gases (argon, helium, hydrogen, mixtures, etc.) have very important functions in the success of TIG welding.

How can you convert stick welder to TIG welder?

You can convert a DC stick welder into a TIG welding machine by adding an air-cooled TIG torch, pure argon, and ER70S-6 3/32 X 36 to the list of required items. Try “scratch start” to start the arc and go on with stitch welding. You can bring a foot pedal for amperage control.

Can you plasma cut with tig welder?

Yes you can actually do some decent metal cutting with a tig machine on certain types of thin sheet metal. ..but NO... it wont be as good as a plasma cutter. For thin aluminum sheet metal in the . 063" and thinner range, you can actually surprise yourself at how well a tig torch can cut.

Is tig welder same as plasma cutter?

Key Differences Between TIG Welding and Plasma Cutting At first glance, TIG welding and plasma cutting appear to be similar operations. Both involve electrical arcs, high temperatures, and handheld torches. However, there are significant differences in these two processes, both conceptually and functionally.

Can I plasma cut with argon?

The most common plasma cutter gases include air, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and argon. All five of these work relatively well on thinner sheets of metal, one-half inch or less, but when the plate thickness increases, fabricators typically use a combination of these gases to improve production.

Do they make a welder and plasma cutter combo?

PORTABLE, RELIABLE UNIT: The multipurpose welder and plasma cutter weighs only 32lbs, making it a great portable option. It features a duty cycle of 60% at maximum amps on all processes. It also easily switches from DC TIG welder to DC stick welder.

Can you cut steel with a TIG welder?

A TIG welder can run at about 60 amps and get the job done on really thin steel or stainless. Keep in mind that this applies to steel and stainless steel. Aluminum is a whole other ball game. You always need to add filler metal when you're welding aluminum.

Can a TIG welder cut?

A tig torch can be used to cut metal, but it is not as good as a plasma torch. cutting metal wih a tig torch requires a small tig cup, more argon flow, and a larger electrode and more amps than welding.

Can a plasma cutter cut glass?

Materials like wood and glass (i.e., materials that don't conduct electricity) cannot be cut by a plasma cutter.

What voltage does a plasma cutter use?

Primary power Several 30-amp plasma cutters, such as the Spectrum® 375 X-TREME™, operate using 120- or 240-volt power.

What gas is needed for plasma cutting?

Oxygen has become the standard gas to use when cutting steel as it offers the fastest cutting speed of any plasma gas. Nitrogen is the best choice when it comes to cutting aluminium and stainless steel and it can provide an excellent cut quality.

Do plasma cutters need an air compressor?

One of the most important requirements for a quality cut when using a plasma cutter is sufficient air pressure to blast the plasma out of the cut. That means you need a quality air compressor as well as a quality plasma cutter, both inside the same cabinet.

What kind of gas is used for plasma cutting?

Compressed air, nitrogen, argon, hydrogen and oxygen, or blends of two or three of these components are the most popular plasma gases for plasma cutting. Choosing the right gas or combination in a blended gas depends upon the metal being cut, the equipment used and the desired performance in the cutting process.

Is tig a plasma?

Plasma arc welding is an advanced form of tig welding. In the case of tig, it is an open arc shielded by argon or helium, whereas plasma uses a special torch where the nozzle is used to constrict the arc while the shielding gas is separately supplied by the torch.

Can you cut metal with an arc welder?

You can use an arc welder to cut through steel. Arc welders are designed to weld metal together using a consumable welding rod.

What is the difference between a plasma cutter and a tig welder?

Without any alterations, a plasma cutter and TIG welder are two different tools. TIG welders act to melt two metals together, while the plasma cutter makes precision cuts along one single slap of metal. Some combo tools provide both features to help make work easier. If you are planning on using the TIG welder as a plasma cutter, you should be wary of any naked flames and take up safety precautions to protect yourself.

What is a tig welder?

What is TIG welding. The Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welder is similar to welding with an oxy-acetylene torch in its design and use. TIG welding is a two-handed manual welding process that is one of the most difficult to learn.

How does a plasma cutter work?

Plasma cutters transfer energy from a central power source to an electrically conductive material through the use of a specialized gas, such as nitrogen or oxygen. The gas is heated to achieve plasma state, which is then directed at the material to be cut.

What is plasma cutting?

Plasma cutters work to cut metal at high temperatures. They offer a clean and quick cut, which allows for effective work. Unlike saws, grinders and welding torches, plasma cutters make light work of cutting through even the thickest sheets of metal.

Why does a welder melt metal?

The electricity passing through the welder’s tungsten electrode, a great choice due to its ability to withstand high temperatures, create s heat along the weld arc. This excessive amount of heat causes the metal to melt, with the operator adding filler metal to piece them together into a single block or sheet.

How many degrees of flame can a plasma cutter produce?

Plasma cutters can produce about 45,000 degree flames. This means that you have to be very careful when using the tool, as it could cause severe and fatal injuries. These tips should help you out when you are using a plasma cutter.

What is the safest ground for plasma cutting?

A good, solid ground which meets the National Electric Code specifications should be first priority when you are planning on plasma cutting. You should also create a 30-35-foot safety zone within which to operate the machine.

How to control a tig welder?

Many TIG welders prefer to control the amperage via a foot pedal, which looks, feels, and functions much like the accelerator pedal in a car. Pressing down on the foot pedal will increase the amperage, and letting your foot off the pedal will decrease the amperage.

What is a tig welding?

Simply put, TIG welding is a manual, two-handed process of fusing two or more pieces of metal together into a single piece that has the strength and structural properties of the parent metal. TIG welding utilizes a non-consuming tungsten electrode to create an electrical arc that melts metal to a molten state.

What is the gas used to protect a weld pool?

When cooled, the weld joint assumes the same anti-corrosion properties as the parent metal. A shielding gas, typically argon , protects the weld joint from any impurities that may compromise the strength of the weld.

Why is it important to start plasma cutting at the edge of the workpiece?

As a general rule, starting plasma cuts at the edge of the workpiece will result in better cuts and protect the torch components from rapid wear.

Where is the air hose on a tig welding machine?

The air hose from the air compressor will connect to the inlet port of the air regulator. On the outlet side of the air regulator is another air hose that will connect to the “gas inlet” port that is also at the rear of the machine. This is the same port that is used to feed argon shielding gas to the machine during TIG welding operating mode.

Where is the TIG torch connected?

Some of these connections, such as the TIG torch and the foot pedal , are made at the front of the machine, while others, including the shielding gas connection, are connected at the back of the multi-process welder.

How does a plasma cutter work?

Basically, what a plasma cutter does is force gas through a constricted opening and energize this pressurized gas with an electrical arc to produce plasma.

Can you turn a Mack truck into a motorcycle?

you could, I suppose, turn a mack truck into a motorcycle, assuming you had enough time and money. but it wouldnt be cheaper or easier than just buying one.

Is plasma high voltage?

Won't work, stick/tig low voltage high current. Plasma is high voltage low current. Its all do to torch design and forming a plasma in air is a lot harder than in argon hence the higher voltage.

Is plasma voltage higher than tig?

The voltage / amperage curve of a plasma is totally different than a tig. The open circuit voltage with plasma is higher than a tig (between 240 and 300 volts DC). Airflow, current and high frequency start must be accurately co-ordinated....pilot current is low and then must ramp up to cutting current....after sensing arc transfer and shutting off the high frequency. Plasma's operate at higher voltage....and typical plasma amperages are between 20 and 1000 amps.....depending on material thickness.
