Is the Sea Cliff Bridge worth the walk?

The Sea Cliff Bridge is a beautiful suspended road that seamlessly serpentines over the coastline. Most tourists just walk or drive over the 665m long bridge, as they have no idea where to go for aerial views of this iconic Illawarra landmark. The way to the viewpoint is hidden and you will need to scramble through a bush, but it is 100% worth it!

How do I find parking on the Sea Cliff Bridge?

Find parking on the Clifton side and walk towards the bridge. Heading north on the bridge on the left side of the road you will see a white sign with black writing with "Sea Cliff bridge" written in it. In front of this sign there is a small parking bay.

Once you emerge from the bushes you’ll see a tree with blue graffiti on and you’ll hear the ocean on your right below you. Follow the path to the right and you’ll see three or four viewpoint areas where you can take some really beautiful photographs. Please please be very careful as the ground can be very loose. Don’t go too near the edge – many people have lost their lives this way.

What should I bring on the Sea Cliff Bridge lookout walk?

DEFINITELY wear trainers or hiking shoes. I am always one for hiking in flip-flops (or ‘thongs’ as the Aussies call them), but this is absolutely a walk you don’t want to be wearing them for. You really need sturdy shoes on this walk.

Essentially, you need to trek up the hill and walk slightly to your left to get to the lookout point. We needed to stop a few times to reassess where we were going next, but eventually, we made it there. Going back down might have been a little harder and slippery with it being so steep. Be advised that you return on the same track.

Is the cliff edge dangerous?

In Late 2018, there was a visitor that sat on the edge of the cliff and fell to their death. As mentioned before, the cliff edges are dangerous and unstable and should not be taken lightly. The walk itself is not that easy and should not be attempted by anyone with walking limitations. Other than that, appropriate footwear should also be worn, accept that there are risks taking any walk and I don’t recommend Children on this track.

Can you walk on the ocean side of the bridge?

Not keen on the hike up, then give the walkway/Cycleway a try. Use the same parking area as mentioned before, and you can spend as much time as you want, walking on the ocean side of the Bridge. It can get a little noisy with all the cars and trucks going past, but it’s defiantly well worth the experience.

Can you park around the whale bridge?

There are only a couple of spots to park around the bridge, but if your lucky enough, you can use the walkway. It’s also a great viewing platform for migrating whales in certain seasons.

Is the Sea Cliff Bridge lookout safe?

The only downside is it’s not the easiest spot to find, or the easiest and most of all, not the safest. If you do intend on venturing to this spot, know that there have been accidents and deaths. The track is not properly formed, nor maintained by the local council or suitable for children.
