What is the purpose of a PEX manifold?

Manifolds serve as control centers that deliver hot and cold water to flexible PEX supply lines running from the manifold to individual fixtures. Each fixture essentially has a home run to the manifold, rather than to a trunk line, as with traditional trunk-and-branch piping.

Is a plumbing manifold necessary?

Plumbing manifolds factor prominently into many plumbing jobs. Virtually every modern residential plumbing system requires at least one manifold, and larger systems may need to rely on several traditional manifolds. For small and medium-sized systems, one PEX manifold may suffice for standard fixtures.

Is there a PEX a manifold?

PEX plumbing manifold, installed in proximity to the hot or cold water supply, helps to eliminate these issues by allowing for a PEX pipe run from the manifold directly to the fixture with little or none concealed connections.

Do you need a PEX expander?

PEX A uses an expansion-style fitting. These fittings are much larger in diameter the PEX B fittings, and require an expansion tool. Using the expansion tool, you enlarge the pipe and sleeve in order slide in the fitting.

Why does Pex hold less water?

It means it will hold less water when the water is not moving. Pex has a lower friction coefficient (it's slipperier) so you can move move the same amount of water through a slightly smaller diameter pipe. The water moves a little faster.

Do I need 1/2" piping for water lines?

It requires less 1/2" piping, but still gives you the ability to shut off water for each fixture. It is not required but it is nice to have. Think of it like an electric panel, but for your water lines. If you need to shut off a room its easy to do without interrupting the rest of the house.

What is a PEX manifold?

A PEX manifold includes separate manifold chambers to serve hot and cold water lines. The cold-water manifold is fed from the main water supply line, and the hot-water manifold is fed from the water heater. Water pressure in manifolds is maintained by the incoming service line.

What is a manifold in plumbing?

Manifolds serve as control centers that deliver hot and cold water to flexible PEX supply lines running from the manifold to individual fixtures. Each fixture essentially has a home run to the manifold, rather than to a trunk line, as with traditional trunk-and-branch piping.

How far away from a water heater should a manifold be?

If the manifold is plastic, it needs a minimum clearance of 36 inches (vertical) and 18 inches (horizontal) from a water heater. Opposing port-type manifolds can be mounted conveniently between stud framing.

How does a manifold system work?

Manifold systems cut energy losses as hot water arrives faster at the tap, especially when a loop or ring is added to the system. Flexible and non-metallic pipes result in a quiet and efficient plumbing system that doesn’t suffer corrosion, scaling, or microbiological buildup.

Is PEX piping a good insulator?

PEX is flexible and can be bent, so fewer fittings are needed than for rigid piping, which means less pressure drop occurs in the lines. Flexible PEX piping is a better insulator than copper and is not susceptible to rust.

What is a Pex manifold?

Pex manifold is a crucial product in the plumbing system. It is useful in water redistribution and overall performance. More so, it provides ease of use and practicality of the piping connections. You can say that it is the backbone of any pex plumbing construction, without which the entire system would collapse.

How long does a PEX manifold last?

How to eliminate joint in PEX?

In areas that are concealed, like under a kitchen sink or vanity cabinet, you can eliminate a joint by running PEX supply directly to the shutoff valve. Use a drop-ear bend support to hold the tubing in a tight bend (right). There are several types of shutoff valves that connect directly to PEX.

What is PEX piping?

PEX piping (shorthand for cross-linked polyethylene) costs less than half the price of copper and installs much faster. And since it’s flexible, PEX makes remodeling jobs easier. PEX has a strong “memory;” it always wants to spring back to its original shape. So working with a coil of PEX is like wrestling with a giant Slinky.

How much does a cinch clamp cost?

The same tool works for all sizes of cinch clamps. Cinch clamp tools start at about $40.

What is a crimp ring?

Crimp rings are a band of metal, usually copper, that you slip over the fitting and compress with a crimp ring tool. The main drawback is that you’ll need either separate crimping tools for one-half inch and three-quarter inch fittings, or a universal tool with a swappable insert (not shown).

What are the grades of PEX?

For water lines there are three PEX supply grades: PEX-A, PEX-B and PEX-C. They’re manufactured differently, PEX-A being slightly more flexible. If you’re ordering online, go ahead and spend a few cents extra for PEX-A. But don’t go running around town looking for it; the difference isn’t that big.

Can PEX piping be frozen?

Probably not. Manufacturers are reluctant to say so, but reports from the field suggest PEX can withstand freezing. You should still protect the tubing from freezing. But since it can expand and contract, it’s less likely to break than rigid piping.

Can you use a stab in tee on PEX fittings?

Some areas don’t allow stab-in fittings to be concealed. Another method is to solder in a tee and a PEX supply adapter. Then slip the PEX supply tubing over the adapter and attach it with your chosen connection method (right). You can also use a stab-in tee to connect PEX fittings supply to CPVC.

What is a plumbing manifold?

The plumbing manifold offers clear utility for residential plumbing customers. Manifolds can be comprised of traditional copper, brass, bronze, or a more technologically advanced material known as PEX/cross-linked polyethylene. In any case, they serve as critical control mechanisms for the flow of hot and cold water. They typically integrate with flexible plastic plumbing systems to deliver reliable streams of water at different temperature points. As such, plumbing manifolds factor into such plumbing tasks as water heater repair, pipe replacement, and retrofitting jobs.
