Do Yorkshire Fittings need flux? There are two types of fitting to make a soldered pipe joint, one which comes with a ring of solder already inside each end of the fitting, called a Yorkshire fitting, and the other, an end feed fitting. You will then need to apply a liberal amount of flux to both the pipe and the fitting.

Do Plumbers use Yorkshire fittings (ring solder joints)?

I'm not a plumber by trade but came into plumbing through the handyman route. I have worked with a plumber on my own house and he taught me to use Yorkshire fittings (ring solder joints). One tip he taught me was to apply some extra solder to the joint when you solder it in a similar way as you would for an end feed joint.

Also consider continually dipping the end of solder wire in the flux, as this will add flux keeping joint clean and the melting wire solder gives indication of when the fitting is at correct temperature I was soldering some 15mm Yorkshire fittings today.

Can I use endend feed for 28mm fittings?

End feed is fine for 15 and 22mm. It takes some skill to get a good flow of solder around a 28mm fitting especially if you are working in cramped conditions. I sometimes use pre-soldered fittings with these joints (though they are veeeery expensive)!

You must always remember to use flux to help the solder to run around the joint in a capillary action. This will ensure a tight, even and watertight pipe join. This will also prevent oxidisation.

Can you solder a Yorkshire fitting?

The application of solder is still a good idea with Yorkshire fittings to be absolutely sure of a good joint. Make sure you have a damp rag handy, and after a few seconds, to allow the solder to set, carefully wipe the joint round. This will cool it and clean it.

In plumbing, flux is a compound used as part of soldering a pipe joint. It's an acidic paste that is applied to the part of the copper pipe where the solder must make a bond. It cleans the joint, if you rub it on some copper and leave it a short while, it will be left gleaming when you wipe it off.

What is flux in soldering?

What is Flux? Flux aids in soldering and desoldering processes by removing oxide films which form on the surface of metals being soldered. It increases the wetting ability of the solder, causing it to flow more uniformly over surfaces without balling-up (dewetting).

A good solder joint should have an even band of solder showing all the way around. If you see an area that looks as if it needs more solder, brush a little flux onto the joint. If the joint is still warm, the flux will melt and flow into the void. Then reheat the joint and resolder.

Cheers hotdog, I am a bit worried now that I have over heated them. If I do then does that stop it working?

doing a bit New Member

i find it easier to use end feed than pre soldered fittings any way, when doing a joint then apply the heat to one side of the fiting and the solder on the far side, when the solder runs on the opposite side the whole fitting is hot enough.

Following on from this, if a joint has dodgy soldering from overheating does it tend to leak right from the go or pop some way down the line?

tightenit New Member

Rule one is that all pipework to be soldered is dry.

freud12 New Member

If the joints look black and sooty after you've soldered, this can be a sign of over-heating - although you may be lucky.

Oh, I forgot to add that I find a small hand mirror useful to see if the solder ring has formed on the back side of the joint. Inspection type mirrors (on telescopic handles) are now available to make this easier (you should be able to pick-up a cheap one of these on a tool market stall).
