I’ve found two trustworthy references that state that Redbuds have a taproot, but in the presence of ‘impenetrable soil’, the taproot grows horizontally. Well, when I transplanted a 3 year old Redbud Tree, I saw numerous lateral roots in many directions – but no taproot!

Redbud tree-taproot question
We bought an 8 foot tall redbud at a garage sale. It was in a huge 20 gallon container , has three main trunks, but was not thriving. We immediately planted it in the ground and I noticed it did not appear to have a taproot although it was obviously rootbound with tons of tiny roots.

To be clear, it obviously had been in the container for a long time as it was rootbound-but I am not sure if it originally had been dig up from somewhere and the taproot cut, or if the taproot was also rootbound somewhere deep in the tangle.
