Is TLS and SSL the same?

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is the successor protocol to SSL. TLS is an improved version of SSL. It works in much the same way as the SSL, using encryption to protect the transfer of data and information. The two terms are often used interchangeably in the industry although SSL is still widely used.

What encryption does Google use?

Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithmGoogle uses the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm to encrypt data at rest. All data at the storage level is encrypted with AES256 by default, with the exception of a small number of Persistent Disks created prior to 2015 that use AES128.

Why is SSL important for Google?

The advantage of SSL is added security for your users. If your users access Google Workspace on a non-secure Internet connection, such as a public wireless or non-encrypted network, your users' accounts may be more vulnerable to hijacking. A secure connection prevents hijacking by protecting the cookie session.

What is TLS 1.2?

This is a change in Google’s policy about SSL secure HTTPs websites, as they previously have said that it did not matter which type of SSL certificate that a website uses as long as it was HTTPs. We are now learning that it does matter, and the server and the SSL certificate must support at least TLS 1.2 or higher.

How to check TLS version?

If you’d like to check your TLS version to make sure your site is compliant, there are various SSL certificate checkers out there. However, many don’t show you the TLS version. The SSLLabs.com checker does tell you the version: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html. In Firefox, you can see the certificate information about clicking on the actual lock symbol in the browser, but it won’t show you the version of TLS being used.

Does TLS 1.2 affect search engine rankings?

Apparently Google thinks that enabling TLS 1.2 or higher on a site will help protect users’ data, so they’re making these recommendations now. No official word yet as to whether or not using TLS 1.2 or lower will have an effect on search engine rankings–but it certainly will be a bad user experience if users got to your site and they get a warning about your site not being secure. I’m sure for ecommerce sites it will have an effect on sales.

Can I use TLS 1.2 on Cloudflare?

If your website uses Cloudflare for SSL (many sites use Cloudflare’s free SSL certificate option), you can enable TLS 1.2 in the SSL settings in Cloudflare. You have the option to have it use a version older than TLS 1.2, but I recommend setting it to TLS 1.2 or higher at this point:

You can access inbound and outbound Transport Layer Security (TLS) certificates in one of two ways: 1 Run the following command:#N#openssl s_client -starttls smtp -connect [hostname]:25 | sed -ne '/-BEGIN CERTIFICATE-/,/-END CERTIFICATE-/p' 2 Use the following Python snippet:#N#import smtplib#N#import ssl#N#connection = smtplib.SMTP ()#N#connection.connect ('[hostname].')#N#connection.starttls ()#N#print (ssl.DER_cert_to_PEM_cert (connection.sock.getpeercert (binary_form=True)))

Bulk encryption algorithm: Encrypts the data ...

What is TLS?

For those who don’t already know, TLS serves to protect your message with encryption while en route to the recipient’s email box. So despite having all of the proper authentications in DKIM/SPF or DMARC; without encryption, your email can apparently still be hijacked in transit. Allowing unauthorized users to intercept and view your message’s content.

Is it necessary to apply layer of security to all emails sent and received?

However, is it really necessary to apply that layer of security to all emails sent and received? Of course not! This is why I predict that the little red open padlock will be welcomed into the Gmail inbox for quite some time with non-marketing users. Gmail isn’t going to start putting that message from ol’ grandpa into spam because he emailed you from an unencrypted connection via his Jitterbug senior mobile plan.

Does Gmail know who is trafficking?

Regardless, Gmail is positioning themselves. As of right now, they already know exactly who is trafficking copious amounts of email to their users. The only adjustment needed on their end is to create a threshold on who is or is not a high volume sender. Once they pull the trigger and a baseline is established; if you still haven’t enabled TLS on outgoing nodes, then all bets are off with regards to deliverability there.

Do we need this added security?

I like Gmail’s step up in security here. However, as email marketers, we must first advocate on the side of deliverability in this instance. So while we do just that, let us not forget about how the groundwork and foundation of email delivery was originally designed. In short, email delivery was not necessarily created, with granular authentication and security in mind. That stuff was added later on, particularly when society started utilizing email in just about every aspect of life – everything from banking to legal advice, to any other sensitive intangible piece of information that you can think of. In certain environments such as those, mailbox to mailbox email encryption makes perfect sense and should be advocated and applied accordingly.
