Things to Consider
Figuring out how to design a deck that fits all your needs can seem intimidating. Before getting into the details of planning a deck, start by considering the big picture.
Parts of a Deck
Decks are built using many building materials and structural elements. Understanding the various parts can help the process of adding a deck easier.
Decking Materials
Part of planning a deck is choosing from the many available decking materials. The look and design of your deck surface will depend on the materials you use.
Consider the Location
There’s a lot to consider when choosing a prime location for your deck. For example, there’s no rule that says a deck must be attached to the house. You might find that a detached location provides the perfect spot for a natural getaway.
Consider Your Space
A well-designed deck should be an expression of how you live. Its style and size should match your taste and fit the way you and your family use the deck.
Deck Design and Decor
Once you have the location, material and size of your deck in mind, consider its layout and decor. Having a full image of your completed deck space will help you finalize the details of your design.
Considerations and Planning Your Deck
This guide will cover how to build a ground-level deck that does not require stairs and a stair railing. In many areas, a ground-level deck is defined as one that has a maximum height of 30 inches above the ground and is not attached to the house.
Dig Holes for Posts
Depending upon your area and local building codes, some decks may only require ground-level footings. In most instances, decks require support from concrete piers that are set into the ground. The terms “piers” and “footings” are often used interchangeably though they are technically not the same thing.
Pour Concrete and Place Post Anchors
Mix ready-mix concrete bags in a wheelbarrow per the manufacturer’s instructions using a shovel or mortar hoe.
Attach Posts or Beams to Post Base
Your deck plans likely call for posts to be set on each post base to be bolted to the deck framing later. In some cases, your deck plans may call for a beam to be set directly in the post bases.
Attach Rim Joists and Angle Brackets
With the posts or beams in place, it’s time to build the deck frame. Because the deck is free-standing, it does not require a ledger board, which gets attached to the house. Instead, your deck will consist of rim joists that make up the deck’s perimeter, to be filled in with joists that will support the decking.
Install Boards and Add Fasteners to Joists
If your deck will be free-standing against the house, you’ll want your wood decking boards to run parallel to the house. If your deck will be out in the yard, then you’ll need to make the decking run parallel to the deck framing itself.

Experiences with Home Deport Deck Installation Services
Home Depot now offers deck installation services. The choices are limited but the thing I like are the warranties. They have two options worth considering. One is a parket looking deck made with pine which they say is nailed from the bottom and comes in squares (4 ft) with a lifetime warranty against nail pops and rotting.

Just keep in mind that these box stores subcontract all of their work so the finished product is only as good as the contractor they send out.
