Penile torsion usually does not require treatment, especially if the rotation is less than 90 degrees. However, due to cosmetic reasons, many parents of boys with mild torsion may want treatment. Penile torsion is treated by surgery, done under general anesthesia.Aug 22, 2019
Is penile torsion serious?
This condition causes the penis to appear to be rotated – or twisted – on its axis. Almost always, this twist occurs to the left (counter-clockwise). Penile torsion can range from mild to severe and has not been shown to affect sexual function or reproduction.
Can penile torsion be fixed in adults?
Conclusion: Torsion of the penis is not uncommon but rarely provokes a complaint. Surgical repair by degloving and skin realignment is effective and easy. Dartos flap technique may be utilized if the former is inadequate.
Can circumcision cause penile torsion?
Abstract: Penile torsion is a congenital anomaly rarely detected in isolation and mostly accompanied by hypospadias and chordee. It could also happen iatrogenically after penile circumcision. In previous literature, the incidence rate of isolated penile torsion has been reported between 1.7 and 27%.
How long does penile torsion surgery take?
Surgery time varies depending on the degree of hypospadias and may range from one to five hours. It is sometimes necessary for a course of male hormone (testosterone) injections to be given before surgery.
How much curve is too much?
A curve of more than 30 degrees is, in most cases, a sign that some level of physical abnormality is present. Though by no means problematic in itself, a curve greater than this is more likely to cause a number of issues for the individual.

In severe cases with more than a 90 degree rotation, penile torsion should be corrected. This condition is often noticed in the hospital or doctor’s office during circumcision or an exam. It is important to seek medical advice if you notice your child’s penis appears rotated or twisted.

Penile torsion cannot correct itself. Those with minor cases can live everyday life with no issues in the functionality of their penis. However, those with extreme cases of penile torsion will need to undergo surgery. A doctor may recommend surgery to parents of a child with penile torsion if they deem it necessary.

If penile torsion is caused by skin misalignment after circumcision can often be corrected by circumcision revision with penile degloving. For patients with congenital penile torsion, penile degloving can often help, but additional maneuvers may be necessary, including counter tension, penile plication, and other surgical maneuvers.

Does penile torsion correct itself? Surgeons do not usually correct penile torsion alone unless it approaches 90 degrees. Usually, doctors repair penile torsion at the same time as performing circumcision. Sometimes penile torsion occurs along with hypospadias, and it may be improved, at least to some extent, during hypospadias repair.

Abstract Purpose: Penile torsion is a congenital malformation that results in a rotational defect of the penile shaft. Various techniques have been described for correcting penile torsion, although there is no consensus on the best repair. We describe our experience using a dorsal dartos flap to correct penile torsion.
