Does the baker's wife die?

The witch and Jack's mom are both single mothers. Hurrah for 1980s feminism, right? So it surprised me that after her one-night-stand with Prince Charming, the baker's wife is promptly killed off while the adulterous prince — who at this point is married to Cinderella — rides away carefree.

What is the theme of Rapunzel's happy ending?

Rapunzel's happy ending drains out all the murky, real world themes about aging, adolescence, growing old and obsolete that Into the Woods worked so hard to build. In the original stage musical, Rapunzel's mother (the Witch) banishes her to the desert. There she gives birth to the Prince's twins, alone.

Why is Rapunzel's lament so complicated?

In the play, it's infinitely more complicated, because the Witch believes she's right. If Rapunzel had listened to her mother, she would still be alive. And in turn, the Witch being right turns the "Lament" into a powerful ballad of delusion and grief.

Why does Rapunzel's accusatory tone about their ambivalence work?

Her accusatory tone about their ambivalence works because she's the only person actively parenting (for better or worse). Up until then, the Baker couldn't even hold his own child. Keeping Rapunzel alive is committing the very crime of being "just nice," and this play is smarter than that. What's worse, in the end the cast agrees with with the Witch in "No One Is Alone," singing, "Witches can be right." But in the movie version, she's not really right about anything.

Why is the musical "Into the Woods" so good?

It's both heartbreaking and chilling. The Witch isn't necessarily upset with her past decision to imprison her daughter. The Witch is struggling with her grief and her own stubbornness. The Giant & Giantess

I thought we'd start out with some of the least depressing goodbyes of the bunch. That's not to say that these giants deserved such a grim fate, but I think it's safe to say the male giant definitely overreacted a bit when Jack stole the magical harp.

The Big Bad Wolf

Let's be honest, this fedora-wearing wolf had it coming what with eating grannies, little girls, and such. However, I would've liked to have seen Johnny Depp a little more than what the movie allotted, especially since there was so much hype surrounding his particular casting.

Jack's Mother

Here's where things started getting really depressing, especially since it was done completely by accident. As the giantess demanded to know the whereabouts of Jack, his mother immediately came to his aid, but was shoved aside by the king's Steward and fatally hit her head on a fallen tree. So just like that, poor Jack became an orphan.

The Baker's Wife

Proving that no bad deed goes unpunished, just after having a romantic encounter with Cinderella's prince, the Baker's Wife ends up falling from a cliff, leaving her newborn baby motherless, much like Jack.

The Witch?

This, I would say, is completely up for interpretation. I chose to believe that when the Witch threw away her beans, she simply vanished and reverted back into her old and ugly self somewhere else in the world. Is that naive? Maybe. Or perhaps I just don't want to live in any world where Meryl Streep doesn't exist in one form or another.

This means that the song “Any Moment” performed during Prince Charming and the Baker’s Wife’s tryst will “probably” be cut. Is Into the Woods on Netflix?

I think Into the Woods is a brilliant piece of musical theatre. It’s difficult to pull off well, but it’s something very different from anything we might expect. The full version of the musical with the original Broadway cast is available on Netflix, and I highly recommend watching it. Until next week!

Does Rapunzel have a relationship with Cinderella?

No real relationships are that perfect, and we get to see that when Rapunzel goes off the deep end, Cinderella’s prince and the Baker’s wife have a brief affair, and as more people get killed the rest of the characters play the blame game.
