Does weight affect vo2 max? Yes. It increases VO2Max because this measure is expressed as the amount of oxygen processed per min per kilogram body weight. (O2 per min/kg) So if you lose weight the denominator decreases and the value increases.

Conclusion: The major influence of body weight on VO2max is explained by FFM; FM does not have any effect on VO2max. Fatness and excess body weight do not necessarily imply a reduced ability to maximally consume oxygen, but excess fatness does have a detrimental effect on submaximal aerobic capacity.

Is VO2max really proportional to weight?

If VO2max was really proportional to weight, you'd expect to see a straight line, but instead the values are all over the map. Note that the girls (circles) and boys (triangles) generally cluster together -- not surprising, since girls and boys have different amounts of body fat. But even within genders, it's definitely not a straight line.

What factors affect VO2 max?

Both internal and external factors affect VO2 max. Women have a lower VO2 max than men. This is primarily due to physiology. The amount of blood your heart can pump partially determines VO2 max.

Does body fat percentage affect VO2 max and cardiovascular status?

Body fat percentage affects VO2 max and thus the cardiovascular status of the athletes. The present study was undertaken to assess the VO2 max and body fat percentage in athletes. The secondary objective of the study was to study the relationship between VO2 max and body fat percentage.

What is the difference between aerobic capacity and VO2 max?

Aerobic capacity of athletes is an important element of success in sports achievements. VO2 max refers to the intensity of aerobic process and actually denotes the maximum capacity to transport and utilize oxygen during exercise done at increasing intensity. VO2 max is the highest rate of oxygen consumption attainable during maximal exercise [1].

Does weight influence VO2 max?

The researchers do further analysis to show that relative VO2max is actually inversely proportional to fat mass -- that is, the more body fat you have, the lower your relative VO2max. In fact, fat mass is a better predictor of relative VO2max than exercise performance (how far/fast you go in the VO2max test)!

Does losing weight improve VO2 max?

The BMI decreased significantly from 34.1 +/- 4.8 on entry to 29.4 +/- 3.5 (mean +/- SD; P < 0.0001). Despite the significant weight loss, VO2max increased significantly (P < 0.001) from entry (19.2 +/- 3.0 mL/kg/min) to completion of 10 weeks (22.4 +/- 5.8 mL/kg/min).

Does muscle mass affect VO2 max?

These findings suggest that VO2max is influenced by the total active muscle mass being recruited during exercise, where the more muscle mass involved during exercise, the higher the VO2max.

Is Garmin VO2 max accurate?

The results from these runners found that Garmin's VO2 max estimation was 95% correct and the error was less than 3.5ml/kg/min. The results are reasonably accurate granting most sub maximal testing has an error of 10-15%.

Is VO2 max on Apple Watch accurate?

For example, it depends upon factors when the heart rate was measured. And it's also dependent on whether you were moving or stationary when making the VO2 max calculation. So Apple's predicted VO2 max, or for that matter, Garmin or any other fitness tracker, may not be very accurate.

How quickly can you improve VO2 max?

How long does it take? If you're currently inactive, you'll likely notice improvements in your aerobic capacity in about four to six weeks after you start training. The fitter you are, the longer it will take to see an increase in your Vo2 max. To continue making progress, you'll need to make your workouts harder.

What causes VO2 max to drop?

An elevated heart rate is an indicator of higher fatigue from workouts. Average heart rate and VO2 Max are inversely related. If the average heart rate goes up it causes the Garmin VO2 Max to go down when training is increased either by intensity or distance or both.

What is VO2 max dependent on?

VO2 max depends on oxygen delivery (atmospheric O2, air exchange in the lungs, pumping power of the heart, and arterial blood flow to the muscles) and also oxygen demand by the tissues (mitochondria consume nearly all of the oxygen utilized) [14].

What is VO2 max?

VO2 max is a measure of the maximum amount of oxygen that your body can consume during maximum workload. The ability of your respiratory system to take in large volumes of air and the ability of your heart and blood vessels to transport oxygen from your lungs to your muscles both contribute to your VO2 max. What does a BMI of 25 mean?

BMI measurements of between 18.5 and 24.9 show normal weight while a BMI over 25 indicates your being overweight. When the BMI value exceeds 30, your weight status is considered clinically obese. High BMI measurements have been correlated with reduced levels of physical fitness, including lowered VO2 max.

Does BMI affect lung function?

Research published in the journal "Chest" has demonstrated a link between increasing BMI measurements and impairments in lung function. When BMI reaches 30, the minimum classification for obesity, the functional residual capacity of the lungs is reduced by 25 percent, and the expiratory reserve volume is reduced by over 50 percent. While these two lung function measurements are not heavily involved in normal breathing, they do drastically limit the lungs' capacity for achieving maximum work and will result in lowered VO2 max values.

Does BMI affect VO2?

According to multiple research studies published in the "Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness," high BMI measurements are linked to lowered VO2 max values. The role BMI plays in reducing VO2 max is related to changes in respiratory capacity and cardiovascular endurance.

Does BMI affect cardiovascular function?

Increased BMI levels have also been associated with decreases in cardiovascular system capacity. Writing in the "Journal of Sports Science and Medicine," researchers have linked high BMI measurements with declines in several measurements of cardiovascular function that impair cardiorespiratory endurance. Again, while these declines will not overly ...

What happens if you control for weight by using VO2max/kg or watts/kg?

So what happens if you control for weight by using VO2max/kg or watts/kg, in that case you are measuring fitness and (endurance) fitness itself tends to be higher in leaner lighter individuals. Alex Hutchinson suggested that VO2max is a combined measure of two different traits: how fit you are (i.e. VO2max divided by lean mass) and how fat you are (i.e. fat mass). Several studies demonstrate that overweight persons have similar VO2max values relative to LBM

What does it mean when a sport is weight sensitive?

However, power sports less so, and even rowing where your weight is essentially supported by the water doesn’t require a light mass to do well provided power is high.

Is VO2 max a good weight calculator?

What does VO2 max measure?

The amount of oxygen you can take in affects your athletic performance. A test to determine VO2 max measures the maximum amount of oxygen you can take in during maximum exertion. Measuring oxygen uptake is one way of measuring exercise intensity. VO2 max is also an indicator for endurance for sports such as cross-country skiing, ...

What is VO2 max?

VO2 max is also an indicator for endurance for sports such as cross-country skiing, triathalons and long-distance running. Even with optimal training, your VO2 max can limit or enhance your performance. Both internal and external factors affect VO2 max.

Why is VO2 lower in women?

Gender. Women have a lower VO2 max than men. This is primarily due to physiology. The amount of blood your heart can pump partially determines VO2 max. Blood pumping is a function of the length of the stroke of the valves, the type of fibers in the heart muscle and the size of the heart.

When does VO2 max drop?

Both males and females ages 18 to 25 have the peak VO2 max of their lives, with gradual declines as they get older. Prior to about 18, the body has not developed to its full capacity. After about age 25, your VO2 max declines at a rate of approximately 1 percent a year.

What percentage of your VO2 is genetic?

Cerritos College in California reports that genetics accounts for 20 to 30 percent of your VO2 max.

How to measure your VO 2 max

Having an idea of what your VO 2 max is can help when it comes to training for sports, improving your health and getting the most out of your workout.

How to improve your VO 2 max

Improving your VO 2 max (and your oxygen intake) means you’re setting your body up for success and how much cardio it can handle. You’ll be able to swim or run (or participate in other cardio-related activities) with more intensity and for longer.

Let,s assume your VO2max is 40 and your weight drops by 1 kg from 80kg to 79kg. That will change the calculated VO2max to 40,5 IMHO.

Please note that VO2max calculation as done by Garmin devices is a very rough estimate, so I do not think that 1 kg difference matters at all (i.e. it might give different value, but neither will be accurate).
