Cigarette lighters will NOT work in an accessory socket, but accessories work fine in a lighter socket (assuming as Mike mentioned that it isn't too dirty for good contact). The reason is one of mechanics, not wiring. The lighter socket has a spring steel clip at the bottom, which the lighter "clicks" into when pressed in.
