He was jealous of Mufasa and wanted to be king so that the other animals would respect him. Instead, Claudius remained unliked by the other animals and didn’t gain from his cruel actions. Ultimately, they are both very cruel characters that were willing to kill in order to get what they wanted. Another character trait that Claudius and Scar share is that they are both selfish. An example of Claudius being selfish is when he says, “Gertrude, do not drink” (V.II.295). Although Claudius does warn Gertrude not to drink one time, he doesn’t actually stop her from drinking the poison meant for Hamlet. He knows that if he stops her from drinking from it then everyone will know that he is aware that the wine was poisoned.
