Get a cheap one from the store. put some tape over the siren hole. test. My daughter freaked out over it too but its gone off a few times now from her bath steam going into the hallway. I think its alright that she freaks out when it goes off because it doesn't happen often and i'm sure or hope she gets over it as she gets a little older.

Oh, I guess you could crack one open and wrap some tape on the speaker. If I wasn't in a hotel I could check is this is viable, but you should be able to cover the "grill" for the speaker from the outside if you can't do that.

We have little shower caps that came with the smoke alarms installed when our home was built. We put one of these over the smoke alarm when cooking indoors and take it off before going to bed.
