TIP “T.I.” Harris: This is it. I ran into one of my partners who’s still staying in the neighborhood and he showed me a paper where everyone in our [third grade] class wrote down what we wanted to be as adults. When it got down to my name it read entertainer. This is always what I wanted to be. It's always been my passion.

Lambert: So it was more of a gradual process?

Harris: Yeah. After those husbands and wives who bought those houses in the ’50s and ’60s had raised their children and grandchildren, they died. They left those houses to their grandchildren or the children, but the children or grandchildren didn’t want to live there. They moved outside somewhere a little bit more, let's call it luxurious.

Lambert: How did you connect with Dr. Melva K. Williams? With your backgrounds being so perceivably different on paper, what made her the right choice as a partner for this course?

Harris: I was doing a speaking engagement in New Orleans and during the meet and greet section she came up to me and said, ‘I want you to teach a class at the HBCU where I work’ (Southern University Of Louisiana).

Lambert: There are a lot of people with inherently negative perceptions of what trap music is and what it represents. Why are you willing to risk it all for the culture?

Harris: Trap music could never be negative. Let me break it down: The American scandal, like Iran Contra, where cocaine was traded for firearms between the U.S. and Nicaragua, happened because the U.S.

Lambert: The affluent white community?

Harris: Exactly. So those laws relating to crack are directly designed to and are going to affect the Black community. Not to mention the cycle of addiction, the addiction of the dealer and of the user. So trap music could never be negative because it is the soundtrack to and a result of a direct attack on us and our communities.

Lambert: With some collegiate courses becoming available in the prison system again, are there any plans for you to make this course available to those in the prison system?

Harris: I hadn’t thought about that, but it’s on the table. Generally they don’t let felons teach or do anything in the prison system, but honestly I would love to if we can find a way to make that happen.
