What is the angle of a crankbrother cleat?

Crankbrother until recently really only offered one cleat, it has 6 degrees of float and a release angle of 15 degrees. If you swapped the cleats, right cleat on the left shoe and vise versa then the release is increased to 20 degrees. For many, this seems and feels so different from their three-bolt road cleats that they didn’t even give them a chance. Well Crankbrothers has been listening and now offers four options. The standard 15° release with 6° of float, A standard 15° release with 0° of float, an easy 10° release with 6° of float and last the easy 10° release with 0° of float. Wow, that’s a lot of options now but really the 6° of float versions are for most of us, leave the 0° of float to the pros.

What is the standard release of a crankbrother?

Well Crankbrothers has been listening and now offers four options. The standard 15° release with of float , A standard 15° release with 0° of float, an easy 10° release with 6° of float and last the easy 10° release with 0° of float.

What happens if your shoe tread is too tall?

If the shoe tread is too tall then the cleat doesn’t clip all the way in, but if it’s too shallow (worn down) then your shoe will rock on the cleat. This is true for almost all two-bolt cleats so check your interface of shoe and pedal. THE RIDE. We set up a few different shoes with both cleats and did our normal rides.

Is float the same as general riding?

The float is the same on both and that made for general riding to feel the same. When there is no sudden exit needed they honestly felt the same. The biggest difference was when we used a lot of body English to get around something or even when in the air.

Great for general MTB use

The standard CB cleat is what I learned on, so its my go-to. I've moved to SPD-SL cleats for long road rides because of the stability and security of the interface, but the setup is very complicated and easy to mess up if you don't know what you're doing. The CB cleats, in contrast, are super easy.

A little worn

I am a moderate MTBiker, and these days mostly ride on hardball surfaces with road tires. The cleats have worn pretty quickly, in my opinion. I don't drag feet or walk around with the shoes on, so not sure why they would wear so easily. I really like the pedals, but will try a different make of cleat if I can find one that fits properly.

Great Cleats

The cleats are a great pairing with Crankbrothers pedals. The 6 degree float is plenty for both on and off road riding. The only challenge comes with the uncliping. Between the float and the 15 degree to unclip, getting out has been more deliberate than my previous clipless pedals (brand withheld).

Exactly what I needed

This product was exactly what I was looking for, a replacement for the set I already had. Durable and worked pretty well up until the tabs were worn to almost not even there. Would have lasted a lot longer without so much pavement walking, and even so lasted 7 years.

Clear Choice for Crankbrothers

If you need an extra set of cleats or replacement for your crankbrothers pedals there is no reason to look elsewhere. I have used these on my commuter bike for the last year without issue.

Pedals

Awesome brand. Quick delivery! Been riding these pedals for years. Extremely durable and easy to use. Allows my feet to float without coming unclipped. Easy in and out.

Cleatus

Ah I’m not going to pretend I can detect something detectable about a cleat. Compared to SPD they feel smoother but more resistance until they release and the release softer whereas the SPD is more a light snap/click.

What is the angle of the cleat on the left shoe?

If you install the cleat with 2 dots on the LEFT shoe, both shoes will have a 20 degree release angle. Does that make sense?

What angle should a cleat go on the right foot?

Docs and videos say that the cleat with 2 dots should go on the right foot for earlier release angle of 15 degrees and it would be 20 degrees on left foot.

Is a 15 cleat the same as a 20?

It's not that one cleat has a 15 and the other a 20, the shape of the cleat is different depending on which shoe its installed on to get the release you want.

Is a cleat symmetric?

Cleats are not symmetric. They are mirror images of each other. If you want one foot to release differently, you need to get two cleat sets.

How long do Crank Brothers cleats last?

Crank Brothers recommends replacing the cleats every 500 hours or so (from installation instructions). According to the instructions, the cleats are made of a soft material so that they wear faster than pedal body.

What shoes are compatible with Crank Brothers?

However, if you like the shoes’ look but use other pedals, the Crank Brothers shoes use a standard cleat mounting pattern and are compatible with Shimano, HT, Time, and other pedals that use a two-bolt cleat.

Will Crank Brothers cleats work with SPD?

Crankbrothers is not SPD. If a device is SPD compatible it usually mentions it on the box or the manual.

How long should SPD cleats last?

Speedplay recommends replacing your cleats every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but as mentioned, it depends on your riding style, conditions and how much you walk around in them.

Are Crank Brothers good?

The Crank Brothers Candy Pedals give riders a slightly larger platform than that of the Egg Beaters while still remaining light and versatile. They have the same 4-sided entry and are excellent at shedding mud. Perfect for riders who do a little bit of everything.

How often should you replace pedals?

Best bet would be to hunt down a set of ATACs from around 10-12 years ago or a set of Shimano M747 pedals.

Are SPD pedals dangerous?

One of the biggest lies told in the cycling industry is that clipless pedals are not more dangerous than flats and that they do not increase your risk of serious injuries. New riders are told that they are just “different” from flats and that neither is safer.
