I’ve read that for every foot of the sofa, you’ll need 1.5-2 yards of fabric, but this all depends of the type of furniture you are recovering.
Measure the Cushions
Measure the couch or chair cushion's width and length seam-to-seam. Don't forget to calculate the measurements for the cushion side panels. One yard of fabric equals 36 inches, and it takes about 2 yards for each cushion, allowing 1 inch for seams, when you lay the individual pieces out to fit the 54-inch wide fabric.
Measure the Back of the Couch
Run the tape measure along the back of the chair or couch from seam-to-seam to determine its width and length measurements. Add 1 inch for each seam. Translate this measurement into yards by dividing the total length measurement by 36 inches.
Measure the Front of the Couch
Repeat the measurement for the front of the couch back, running from seam to seam, width and length. And do the same for the sides and arms, inside and out, and the seating area with the cushions removed. As long as the width measurements are no larger than 54-inches wide, simply add the length measurements together and then divide by 36.
