The simple way is to head out to your meter box, open it up and have a look. If you have three main switches or three fuse cartridges, you have three phase power. If you only have one, you have a single phase connection.

How do I know if my power supply is 3 phase?

Look for 3 poles to identify a 3-phase power supply. Count the number of poles connected to the main switch in your switchboard. A 3-phase power supply has a switch that controls the flow of electricity through 3 circuits, so there are 3 poles.

How do I know if I have a 3 phase site?

A household with a 3 phase power supply & 3 phase smart meter. Note the 3 x service fuses at the top left of the board. Single phase sites have only one of these. Another way to identify three phase from single phase is the width of the main switch. Single phase switches are 'one pole' wide, whereas 3 phase switches are 'three poles' wide.

How do I know if my Switch is single phase or 3-phase?

If your Main Switch is 1-pole wide, then you have a single phase power supply. Alternatively, if your Main Switch is 3-poles wide, then you have a 3-phase power supply. Tip: A “pole” is often similar in size to a finger width (18mm/ 0.7″ approx). Three poles would then be similar to three fingers together (54mm/ 2.1″ approx).

What is the difference between single phase and three phase power supply?

Single phase sites have only one of these. Another way to identify three phase from single phase is the width of the main switch. Single phase switches are 'one pole' wide, whereas 3 phase switches are 'three poles' wide. See the picture below for what I mean.

Option 1: It's Written

Try to locate your electricity supply meter. More often than not, it’s written on the face of the meter. The below image is an example of “SINGLE PHASE” written on the meter face, which tends to get a little lost in the surrounding text; see if you can spot it. Consider though, what is written may vary on your meter.

Option 2: A Phone Call

Without getting over technical and to save you the effort of looking at your electrical switchboard, there is someone who will know instantly—your electricity supply company. The good news, they’re only a phone call away and free to ask.

Option 3: Switchboard Visual Assessment

The electrical switchboard visual assessment is often an ideal way to identify a single-phase or 3-phase power supply. What you need to identify is the MAIN SWITCH. In most instances, the main switch will either be what is referred to as 1-pole wide or 3-poles wide. If your Main Switch is 1-pole wide, then you have a single phase power supply.

Option 4: Service Fuse Identification

Service fuse identification is potentially the most straightforward visual assessment, if available. The fact is that many service fuses are not always conveniently located below the electricity meter. Therefore, this method may not be ideal. Below are some examples of a single phase or 3-phase service fuse identification.

Option 5: Point, Click, Send

The camera on your smartphone is a wonderful tool. Take a photo of either your;

Option 6, Existing Appliance Identity

Identify if you have any existing 3-phase appliances in your house. If your home possesses an extra powerful 3-phase air conditioner or a 3-phase pump of some kind, then the only way these fixed appliances will operate is with a 3-phase power supply. Therefore, you have 3-phase power.

LIVE POLL: What was the best method for you?

We’re all from different parts of the world, therefore, the way we notice power supplies are often quite diverse. Which method below helped you identify your sing phase or 3-phase power supply the easiest? Your simple answer (no strings attached) helps us build better content for you long term.

What About Single or 3 Phase Solar Power?

Our solar energy monitor also requires you to select whether your PV system is single or three phase. Like above, you can work this out by observing the 'Solar Main Switch' as per the examples below.

What is a service fuse?

A service fuse is a large black rectangular fuse. They're generally quite easy to spot at your main switch board or meter board.

Is there a two phase power supply in Australia?

Two phase power supplies are actually also quite common in Australia. Two phase power is best identified using the 'Service Fuse' method outlined above. There will be two service fuses present for two phase, rather than one or three.

How many wires are in a 3 phase supply?

On three Phase supplies they are usually 4 Wire (4W) as you can see under the 240 Volts rating. Domestic single phase split supplies have the 3 Wire (3W) marking on the nameplate.

What does 3 phase mean on a breaker?

But basically, count the number of levers coming out of your main breaker. 3 means 3 phase. 2 means two mains at 180 degrees or single phase. 1 may mean its a 3 phase breaker, but to be sure you would have to count the big conductors (red and black, not white) going into the breaker.

How many phase power supply does Australia have?

Seems like the US readers below suffer under unconscionable burdens. In Australia, many homes have a 3 phase, 415V power supply. We have it in our home on normal tariff and also off peak tariff.

What voltage is used for a 3 phase installation?

Voltages will typically be 208 line to line and 120 line to neutral for a three phase installation (or 480 / 277 for heavier industrial applications), and 240 line to line and 120 line to neutral for a single phase installation (BUT … it’s also common in such as apartmen. Continue Reading.

How many wires are in a house?

In general. household electrical service in North America is single phase three wire 120/240 volt. That is to say that there are three wires, two "hots" (typically red and black) and a "neutral" (typically white).

What voltage should be tested between any two lines?

3:The voltage tested between the any two lines should be (squareroot (3)× voltage of one line wrt ground

Why do companies charge more for 3 phase?

Three phase is usually for industrial applications and the electric company usually charges a lot more for it because industry is usually making money with that 3 phase power. If you have a single devise that runs on 3 phase, you can get a converter so you can run it on single phase.

How to tell if a telephone line is three phase or single phase?

To determine if your line is three-phase or single-phase, first look for wood poles —often called a telephone pole or utility pole. All distribution lines, whether three- or single-phase, are mounted on wood poles. Metal poles carrying electrical wires are transmission lines. In rural areas, wood poles are usually placed along a road.

Where are the wires on a 3 phase line?

On a three-phase line, two of the wires will be mounted at either end of a horizontal “T” bar, and one of the wires will be mounted centered between those, and usually a little higher above. There may be additional wires below the three at the top (such as telephone or cable TV lines) but lines carrying electricity will always be mounted at or ...

How to tell if your solar farm is three phase?

To determine if your line is three-phase or single-phase, first look for wood poles —often called a telephone pole or utility pole.

Is a wood pole a single phase line?

If the wood pole only has two wir es near the top of the pole, with one above the other and there is no T-bar, this is a single-phase line. You may see occasional exceptions to these configurations. The key is to look for three wires, in parallel. If you see that, you most likely have a three-phase line.
