Secure
Once the glue has been allowed to dry overnight, remove the clamps and further secure the 1x2 with finish nails if desired. On the back, screw pilot holes and drive 1-inch wood screws to increase the overall strength of the ledge. To hang, locate the studs in the wall and drill directly through the back boards into the wall.

If you chose to go the eclectic route, I’d say to be sure you have a good mix of artwork, matted and non-matted frames, and wood finishes. You can buy editing presets for as cheap as $2 each on Etsy for Lightroom mobile (a free iPhone app). This will give everything a very clean, put-together look. If you’re unsure about using a preset, when in doubt, print all of the pictures in black and white.

You can also use wood glue and nails rather than clamps, but then you will be able to see nails on the front of the ledge. I prefer a more seamless look. After the glue has dried, screw the 1×4 to the back edge of the 1×3. If you are using a soft-wood like pine, you won’t need to predrill.
Step 1: Gallery Walls the Hard Way
This picture is what used to be my photo wall...pretty awkward. I hung a picture or two and worked my way out from there.
Step 2: Gallery Walls the Easy Way
I have a few of photo ledges from the swedish import store (can you say Ikea on Instructables?), but they max out at about three and a half feet long. (If this were simply an I'ble on easy gallery walls for a smaller space, I'd just point you in that direction...cheap, easy, done.)
Step 3: Assemble As Shown
I assembled the boards as shown in the diagram. For the back two pieces I used wood screws. For the front piece, the 1" x 2", I attached it with finishing nails. I spaced both nails and screws about 11" apart along the length of the shelf.
Step 5: Hang Your Ledges and Load 'em Up!
To hang mine, I located the wall studs, drilled a pilot hole through the wood and screwed the shelf to the wall studs so they would be very secure. I didn’t bother to countersink or fill the holes in the shelf, there are plenty of pictures to cover those.
