Chartered Legal Executive lawyers are fee earners. In private practice, their work is charged directly to clients making a direct contribution to the income of a law firm. This is possible having achieved the Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice.
When can I submit my Cilex portfolio?
By the time you have served 12 months in the Graduate grade of membership, your portfolio should be ready to submit. It enables students to integrate aspects of their work experience with specific areas covered in their degree studies, requiring students to seek out links between theory and practice with their work experience as a source of primary data.

How Long Will It Take To Qualify?
This will vary from trainee to trainee. Those with undergraduate or postgraduate legal qualifications will not have to start at the beginning and the flexibility of the qualification means it is possible to pause learning and progress at whatever speed suits an individual. As you are applying to be a qualified lawyer, we will ask you some questions about your background, through a statement of prior conduct on the application form. As a qualified lawyer, the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 does not apply, and you must declare additional information about convictions that would otherwise be treated as spent.

For school leavers, the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice is the first of the CILEx courses you will undertake on your path to qualification as a chartered legal executive. You can complete it after your GCSEs or A-Levels.
CILEx Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice
This is the next level up of the CILEx Courses. It is the final academic stage towards qualifying as a chartered legal executive. You can study this at your own pace, but the qualification normally takes around two years to complete.
