Step 1: Materials Needed

This ible will be somewhat generalized due to everyone's varied preferences in size and material.

Step 2: Laying It Out

My gate threshold is 3 ft and I want to make sure that I closely match the gaps used in the rest of the fence. So lay out the boards on the ground and get an idea of where you can fudge things. It turned out, I could perfectly fit 7 planks using the same sized gap. I took my frame measurements from the existing fence section.

Step 3: Putting It Together

After you've made your cuts, lay it all out and check your measurements. Also lay the hardware out where it's supposed to go. Once everything checks out and the frame is squared, mark your holes for the L brackets making sure the framework doesn't get too jarred out of alignment. Take note as to how square your brackets are.

Step 4: Hanging the Gate

This might be a little tricky if you do this alone like I did. There's always a way to go about something though if you put your mind to it. First, is to simply position the gate as close to where it's supposed to go so you can eyeball it. Look at it's squareness or take note of any potential problems that might hinder the gates operation.

Step 5: Attaching the Hinges

Make sure you're still level. You don't want the gate to swing one way or the other all the time, it should be nicely balanced.

Step 6: Finishing Up

Now get those planks on, and attach whatever kinda hardware you'd like to use to keep it shut. The header I have on there right now is a temporary one being just a 2x4 across the top. I plan to create a nice one soon. Cheers!

Preparing to Build a Fence

Check local codes and homeowners association guidelines that might govern fence style, size and placement. Codes may also specify post hole requirements.

Installing a Shadowbox Wood Fence

The instructions below show you how to build a DIY privacy fence . This shadowbox fence has pickets alternating on each side, offering some privacy but allowing you to look through the fence at an angle. A solid fence has all pickets attached tightly together on the outside only, blocking views and offering complete privacy.

Fence Layout and Post Locations

Follow these steps to mark the layout and establish the post locations.

Dig Post Holes and Set Fence Posts

Follow these five steps to dig your post holes and set the fence posts.

Install the Fence Pickets

One of the keys to installing fence pickets is keeping the tops at a uniform height. For this fence, the bottom of the pickets will be about 1-1/2 inches above the ground. There are a couple of ways to keep them at the correct height.

Build and Install the Fence Gate

When building a fence gate, you'll need a gate hardware kit. The hardware keeps the gate square and prevents sagging over time.

Finishing and Maintaining Your Fence

Wait a few months before staining or painting to allow the lumber to dry completely. Pressure-treated lumber should be stained or painted every few years. Follow the product manufacturer’s guidelines for preparation and application.

Types of Slopes Effecting Gate Operation and Placement

There are two specific types of slopes that need defined. Each one effects how a gate will hang and operate differently. For the sake of explaining the two types, let’s assume we are looking at the gate from the outside of the fence and that the gate is in the closed position.

Special Custom Gates Designed for Slopes

There is one last option for gates on a slope. However, not all fence manufacturers will offer them. Furthermore, they will not work with every type of fence material. These are special designed racked gates.

Conclusion

As you just learned, gates on a slope pose some challenges. If an option to avoid installing one is available I recommend it. However, if it is a must, you now know what to expect, how it will have to hang, the direction it will have to swing and you should be able to envision how it will look.
