New here... bear with me. I have just moved into a house where the previous owners secured everyting (and I mean everyting) to the walls with 1" - 1.5" screws and wall plugs. There are literally hundreds of them all over the place. I've cleared most of them from one room so now need to fill the holes.

elponko

oh. I've taken the plugs out now. i didn't think you could fill over them. I could put them back in, i suppose, and then knock them in a bit to fill over them.

JohnD

you can almost always punch them in by putting a screw a couple of turns into the plug and tapping it with a hammer. Then unscrew and remove the screw

opps

I too tap them in just under the surface. I use a screw to do this, hitting the pointy end with the hammer. then the OneTime filer.

How do I fill a hole in plasterboard?

Clean loose material. Lightly spray the hole to dampen. Use a spray foam and fill the void then leave to dry. Cut back the excess so it's just below the surface of the existing plasterboard. Use finger if needed to push it back a little. Get some ready mixed filler or powdered whichever you prefer and fill the dent bringing it flush to the existing wall. Leave to dry and sand excess smooth. Then paint or paper over. That's how I do it as it ensures a solid crack resistant finish and saves faffing about trying to cut bits of plasterboard to the right size. Save so much messing about and gives the best finish possible. In my opinion.

Can you smear joint compound over drywall?

If any of the face paper on drywall puckers outward, this needs to be trimmed before you cover the holes with joint compound. You can't simply smear joint compound over these areas—the hole needs to be concave in order to be smoothly covered.

Step 1: Supplies

A few supplies are needed.: A small container of Spackle, a putty knife, paint, small paint brush, plastic knife, towel, water, and a sanding brick. To get the correct color of paint, if you have a small paint chip take it to your local hardware store and have them color match a small sample container.

Step 2: Filling the Hole

Mix up a the spackle to make sure it is a smooth consistancy. You won't need much for a small hole, so only put a little on a corner of the putty knife.

Step 3

Completely fill in the holes, using a light pressure. It will get on the walls around the holes, you can wipe it off with a lightly dampened towel.

Step 4: Sand the Wall

Once the Spackle is completely dry, lightly sand to make the Spackle blend into the wall. If your wall is textured, be very careful to not over sand.

Step 5: Paint Prep

With the plastic knife, mix up the paint to a smooth consistency and color. Over time paint has a tendency to separate, so it is very important that the paint is completely remixed.

Step 6

You can then use the knife as a small pallet to help you when painting the wall instead of carrying the paint container around the room. Lightly dab the paint on the repair. Depending on the color, it may take a few coats of paint to get it to blend into the paint around it.

I have various holes in my plaster walls, where the previous owner must have drilled to put some kind of fixture in for shelves etc. So the hole is essentially a very small cylinder poking into the plaster at right angles to the surface.
