Any quick fix advice on how to overcome this without having to rip out the back box (as the walls are newly decorated)

It may just need re-tapping with 3.5mm tap. If not you may find that the lug is bent over slightly which is stripping the screws as you try to tighten them up.

I agree with ripped off. Once you've wrecked the box you'll have to hack it out, fit a new one and make good. It's not worth it, just to save the cost of the rethreader, which will come in useful over and over again.

If it wont tap out gently squeeze the lug across the flats to make the hole slightly oval then retap. Usually works to get you away.
