Nestled south of the now-closed Devil’s Slide Bunker, Gray Whale Cove State Beach is Montara’s hidden treasure. Park in the lot on the east side of the Pacific Coast Highway, carefully cross the roadway, and tackle the steep downgrade before arriving at the beach below. Take a left when your toes hit the warm sand to avoid the clothing-optional section of this cove, and admire the eroded cliffs that line the beach’s eastern edges. Spend some time watching for the migrating whales that frequently travel past this stretch, then continue the drive south.

This state beach park has four miles of wide sand encompassing a good chunk of the bay. It’s great for a few reasons; the first is that it’s the only Coastside beach park offering camping. The second is that it’s very easy to get to from Highway 1 and downtown. In the 1960s, the secluded, former logging town of La Honda became a bohemian hideaway when writer Ken Kesey, who penned “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” settled into a log cabin and hosted raucous shindigs with counterculture celebs such as The Grateful Dead and Hunter S. Thompson.

Highway 84 soon delivers you back to Highway 1 at the dramatically scenic San Gregorio State Beach. The driftwood-strewn shore features a large estuary teeming with shorebirds, and tall grassy bluffs with sweeping vistas of the pristine coastline.
