What you want to do is put some on the end of the dogs ear (anywhere from the tip of your pinkie finger to the size of a nickel) depending on the dog. You put the glue on the end of the dogs ear to the side of his face about 1/2-1inch from his eye. Hold for 2-3 minutes each ear.

How to massage a dog's ears?

Rolling: If you feel uncomfortable taping, you can "roll" the ears. Essentially you are going to massage your dogs ears forward. Do this for about 10 minutes a day about 3 times a day. Your going to place your fingers behind the cartilage of the ear and just massage it forward like your molding the cartilage into place. This can help. I have notice a difference. Only thing is you’ll have to do this a lot and maybe make a routine out of it. Plus the dogs really enjoy the massage. Lol!

How to make a chin strap?

Start with a piece of tape on the inside of both ears with a little bit hanging down. Yes sticky side inside the ear at the point. Then you’ll take a long piece and pretty much make a chin strap going up to connect with the other pieces of tape you put on the ears to overlap each other and stick together.

What percentage of Aussies carry MDR1?

50% of all Aussies have the potential to carry the MDR1 gene. What that means is that they can have an oversensitivity to standard medications... Ivermectin for one. If they are exposed to certain medicines they can have neurological issues. It is applicable to all Aussies and Border Collies. 50% of all Aussies carry this gene not dependent if they are small or large or standard size.

Is a mini an Aussie?

The argument is whether a mini is an Australian Shepherd is a stupid argument. The mini could be considered a small standard, but the matter of fact is that the "mini" is not an Aussie at all. It’s called a Miniature American Shepherd for a reason. It may have its main genetics to be an Australian Shepherd, but in reality the breed was bred with another dog to be smaller, JUST like the toy. The toy is not an Aussie what so ever. It’s ears are always up and I don’t know any Australian Shepherds that look like a cross between a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua. They have pointy noses and big eyes. They do not look like real Aussies. Not saying that either one of these breeds are good dogs, but they are not a real Australian Shepherd. Sorry if that offends anyone who breeds them or owns them, but they just got bred down in size because people didn’t want a big one. Doesn’t mean they got all of the wonderful traits of the Aussie.

Is it normal for Aussies to be smaller?

It's normal. When a slightly smaller aussie is bred to a larger aussie, the size of the pups is not guaranteed. I do not call my smaller aussies "mini aussies" because they are pure aussie, just grew up to be smaller than the AKC's breed standard.

Is a mini Aussie a separate breed?

To the person above this comment, mini aussies are not a separate breed. If you knew anything about the breed, you would have a little more knowledge toward that statement. Mini aussies ARE australian shepherds. For those who have a problem with that, don't buy a smaller aussie. Simple as that.

Is an Aussie bigger than a German Shepherd?

I researched the Aussie quite extensively prior to getting one. Apperently, the breed always varied in size depending upon the required job. For sheep, they were small (our minis) and for cattle, they were bred bigger. Much the same has happened to the German Shepherd. They are much larger here in American. Please do research prior to stating your own opinions. Thank you.

How Do You Know What Ears Your Aussie Will Have ?

Unfortunately, you won’t know until teething stops. And although some owners state that you’ll have a good idea after just a couple of months old, it’s unlikely. Ears change dramatically throughout teething.

What is the shape of an Australian Shepherd's ears?

Traditionally, Australian Shepherds have medium-sized triangle-shaped ears that break forward and sit to the side a little, otherwise known as “side-placement” or “button ear”. (photos below) Aussies can still have erect standing ears. But only ears that break forward are considered breed standard. Erect, prick, or droopy ears are considered ...

When Will Australian Shepherd Ears Stand Up?

Questions about ear placement come early, and rightfully so, ear movements change dramatically from as young as 12 weeks old. This leaves owners wanting to know if the ears will stand up? stay down? or go down after having stood up?

What is the side placement on an Australian Shepherd?

⭐ Side-placement (button ear): Considered the traditional look of an Australian Shepherd. The AKC and the ASCA have slightly different stances on where the ear should fold. But all in all, this is the standard look.

What is the best way to train an Australian Shepherd?

Brain Training For Dogs has become increasingly popular with Australian Shepherds in the last few years. It’s now recognized as perhaps the best way to train your Aussie in the most stress-free, positive way.

Is an Australian Shepherd a fault?

Erect, prick, or droopy ears are considered a “fault” by the AKC. Australian Shepherds that have erect ears would have inherited this trait from previous generations. And it’s important to state, it is still possible for a purebred Australian Shepherd to have erect ears, even though it’s rare. And to clarify, the AKC uses ...

Do Australian Shepherds have triangle ears?

Australian Shepherds traditionally have moderately sized triangle ears that sit high on the head and break forward. This is known as a side-placement or “button ear shape”. But not all Aussies will have this. It’s still possible for purebred Australian Shepherds to have erect, prick, or semi-prick ears as an adult.

What glue do you use to keep dogs ears in place?

If the owner is more interested in having "standard" ears, you can use a little " Tear Mender " or other latex glue product to help keep them in the right position.

Where is the button ear on a dog?

The button ear is on her right side (left side of photo) and the other ear folds differently. I will also include a photo of a pup named Passion, who has the same thing going on with more noticeable differences. It shows what ears may turn out like if left natural or glued.

What size should ear leather be?

The ears should be of moderate size, triangular in shape, and set high up on the side of the skull. The base of the ear leather should originate slightly above eye level. There should be some lift at the base to allow for air circulation, while breaking over enough to offer protection from foreign objects. The correct ear leather size should reach the inside corner of the nearest eye.

How old do dogs have rose ears?

I would recommend starting whenever the ears start to go funny. That could be as soon as 10 or 12 weeks of age, or later. I am adding a photo of my dog Lucy, who shows one "button ear" and one "rose ear" in this photo. Hers go back and forth all the time. The button ear is on her right side (left side of photo) and the other ear folds differently. I will also include a photo of a pup named Passion, who has the same thing going on with more noticeable differences. It shows what ears may turn out like if left natural or glued. Both ears are correct by the breed standard, but many find the button ears which fold forward to be more appealing than the rose ears which may stick out to the side. On Passion her left ear (right side of photo) is a button ear, and her right one is a rose ear.

Where do hound ears hang?

Hound ears come off the head lower, closer to the line from the outside corner of the eye, and will hang down to the jawline or lower.

Where are dew claws on dogs?

I wanted to talk a little about dew claws. These are the smaller claws/toes on the front legs of a dog, and less commonly, the hind legs. Many breeders remove them shortly after birth. Some breeders, especially those breeding for performance activities such as agility, leave them on the front legs, but everyone would remove them from the rear, at least in this breed.

Should I glue my dog's ears?

There are various opinions on whether one should glue ears however, especially in a dog that may be bred. One side says if the ears are glued, you will never know what they have genetically. I agree and understand that point of view. The other side says that if the dog is superior in other ways, why not glue ears so it can be more competitive in the show ring. A third group may say they just want their dogs to look like the typical Aussie. I can see all points of view and will let people make up their own minds on the topic. I also decided to put up a few photos (coming soon) of the process, for those who may want to do it.
