I've checked the archives and really didn't see what I am looking for. I am wondering what the best way to hang some skulls from the wall would be. I have a newly cleaned buffalo skull that I would like to hang from the wall. I also have some bear and deer skulls that I would like to mount on Euro plaques.

If you plan to attach a skull to a panel use molly bolts. You can get them in any hardware store like Home Depot, Lowe's etc. With an extra large drillbit drill a hole into the back of the skull at apporximately the height of the upper eye sockets (the bone there is fairly thick and hard).

Don't drill your skulls...eeek! No need to damage them. Loop some steel wire through the nerve holes on either side of the foreman magnum (where the spinal cord enters the skull), and hang it like you would a picture frame.

This is my way, it is easy, fast, and cheap!!! Drill a 1/16" hole in the center of the sphenoid process... (see Skull1), take a 1" drywall screw and thread into the pre-drilled hole (Skull2). The finished procedure is shown in Skull3.

To attach to a panel, predrill the 1/16" hole, and use a 2 1/2" drywall screw to pull down to the panel as shown (Skull4) DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN, or you will break off the delicate pedestals that the skull rests on. The finished product is shown in Skull5. I do 15 to 25 of these annually, and I have NEVER had one come loose or fail in any way.

I fix a couple of skulls every year that have the one screw through them. They get bumped somehow, (dusting maybe) and bam you have a skull pulling off of the screw.

I use braided stainless wire looped thru holes as described in an earlier post by Alicia as my #1 preference. I use Joey's method also with the stainless bracket IF the owner has used a HACKSAW to cut off the head and damaged the joint on the skull. This is VERY common. On heavier skulls like Elk I use a toggle bolt instead of screws.

I bought a Black Wildebeest skull and want to mount it on my wall......it is a lot heavier than i imagined...the horns are massive about 20 inches wide...how would i do this?

Many have sworn by using heavy braided wire. Not picture hanging wire but something similar that has a bit more heft to it. There is another recent post on hanging heavy skulls and there was an answer that described it better and how to secure it to the skull. Hang the skull from a nail driven through the wall and directly into a stud behind it.

If you have a welder they are easy enough to make. I make these so that the skull just slides onto the hanger in the brain hole. Keeps them from rotating too. But by far the easiest, cheapest, is a wire hanger. i like the skulls to tip out a little from the wall though.
