How does a battery coil work?
Looking at my picture you can see that for the primary of the coil, the ‘+’ from the battery goes to the ‘+’ of the coil, through the primary windings, out the ‘–‘ of the coil to one side of the points. The points contacts touch (closed switch) and the other side of the points (the body of the points) go to the common ‘–‘. When the battery is connected current is flowing through the primary coil. When the points are opened up, breaking the circuit in the primary, this is when the secondary’s magnetic field collapses, voltage increases to such a point that it’s high enough to shoot a spark across the air gap in the spark plug between the center electrode and the ground electrode. If the spark plug was in an engine, with the compressed air/fuel mixture, this spark would ignite the gas, causing it to expand, pushing the piston down. The condenser prevents a small arch across the points (the primary winding of the coil) when the circuit is opened.
What happens when the points open on a spark plug?
When the points open – this breaks the circurt between the battery and the primary windings, the magnetic field that's in the ignition secondary coil collapses and induces a high voltage into the secondary circuit of the ignition system. The voltage is high enough (15k to 24k + volts depending on the coil & conditions) to cause electricity to arch across the spark plug.
How many volts does it take to shoot an arch of electricity across the electrodes in a spark plug?
The amount of voltage that it takes to shoot an arch of electricity across the electrodes in a spark plug is in the TENs of THOUSANDS of volts. If you work on cars/motorcycles/lawn mowers, etc. You’ve probably been zapped by a spark plug. It really sucks, no other way to put it.
What are the parts of a 12V coil?
Parts. 1. 12v automotive coil. 2. One set of automotive breaker points. 3. One auto motive condenser. (In my example all 3 of these are from a 1960s Volkswagen) you can probably mix and match from what you have and it won’t matter. 4. Spark plug – any will work.
Why is a condenser in place?
The condenser (basically a capacatior) is in place because when the magnetic field collapses in the primary circuit, a short voltage spike is introduced to that circuit as well. The condensor/capacitor absorbs this voltage spike and prevents an arch of electricity across the open points.
Where does the output of a spark plug go?
Spark plug: The output of the coil goes to the top of the spark plug (via the spark plug wire). The body/threads and ground electrode go to the common ‘-‘.
What is the connection between a condenser and a coil?
Condenser: The condenser connects between one side of the points and ‘-‘. The body is bolted to the common ‘–‘ and the lead of the condenser is connected to the lead coming from the points which goes to the ‘-‘ of the coil.
How to replace a spark plug on a 4 cylinder engine?
An easier method to do this is to replace the spark plug wires, one at a time. Pull the old one from the spark plug and the distribution cap and replace it with a new one . Repeat the step for all 4 cylinders. This method is extremely simple, and you will not have to remove the distributor cap. However, if the wiring is mixed, then you have to use the guide above.
How to remove distributor cap?
Start by removing the distributor cap. This is a big round part where all four spark plug wires are connected. The distributor cap is located in the front or at the top of the engine. It is held in place tightly by two latches. Remove the latches using a screwdriver.
What is the firing order of a spark plug?
Link the number one firing terminal with the first cylinder on the engine. But, this is the first cylinder in the spark plug firing order. This cylinder can be the first or second on the block. In most cases, it will have a marking but if it doesn’t have, consult your owner’s manual.
What happens if you put spark plugs wrong?
If you place the spark plugs wrongly, then it will affect the performance of the engine. If your mistakes are more severe by interchanging more than two plugs, the engine will not start. This guide helps one to answer the question of what order do spark plug wires go in.
Why do spark plugs need to be replaced one at a time?
In most cases, the wires are labeled with numbers that will help you match with the right cylinder. To avoid mixing up and placing spark plug wires in the wrong cylinder , it is prudent to replace them one at a time. Placing spark plug wires in the wrong order will affect the engine’s performance or prevent it from starting.
How does a distributor cap work?
The distributor cap sends electricity according to the firing order of the engine. Each spark plug gets the electricity at a specific time when the piston located on top of the cylinder compresses the mixture of air and fuel. The role of the spark is to ignite the mixture and cause combustion.
What happens if the firing order is wrong?
The wrong firing order makes the spark be delivered to the cylinder either when there is no air and fuel mixture or when the mixture is not properly compressed. In an extreme case, the engine will not start after turning the ignition.
WHAT IS A SMART PLUG?
A smart plug can plug into your electrical outlets and sockets. You then plug any device into it and use the smart plug’s corresponding app to control the device via your phone or smart assistant (think: Alexa, Google Hub Max or Apple Siri ).
How to choose the best smart plug?
There is a lot of choice when it comes to smart plugs. If you already have a smart speaker with a smart assistant on it (let’s say Amazon’s Alexa on an Echo Dot as an example), it makes good sense to buy smart plugs that are compatible so that you can control the plug not just from your phone but with your voice, too. Most plugs are compatible with more than one smart assistant, but always check first.

Can smart plugs be connected to Wi-Fi?
The easiest smart plugs to set up and go can connect to your home’s Wi-Fi. Others connect through a hub, and tend to be cheaper than Wi-Fi enabled ones. However, the reason to opt for the second type of smart plug shouldn’t be price: rather, you’d buy these because they might integrate with another system you have or are planning to buy, such as smart lighting.
Do smart plugs work with other smart devices?
If you’re looking to really build up a smart home, it’s important to pick smart plugs that will work with your other smart devices. Let’s say, for example, that your smart doorbell or smart security cameras spot a potential intruder while you’re out or away, some of the cleverer smart plugs can be set up to switch on a lamp indoors, making it look like you’re home. Look out for the acronym IFTTT (If This Then That) on the smart plug’s spec.
