Cut the apron at one end (plastic tubs) with a jigsaw, slice the caulk along the floor, remove any fasteners, and lift the tub up and out. Cut 2×4 nailers the length of the opening, slip them behind the drywall edges. Drive 1-1/4-in. screws through the drywall to anchor them.
Install the apron by sliding the upper edge of the apron under the edge of the bathtub and centre the apron between the two walls. Maintain the apron in position and insert the plastic thumb screws through the holes under the lower edge of the apron and in the hardware (Fig. 7.1). Do not over-tighten.
The installation of apron-style tubs involves less work and materials than an island-style bathtub. Follow the manufacturer’s provided dimensions to rough in alcove wall studs with 2-by-4 lumber to ready the area for the bathtub installation.
What is the difference between apron bathtubs?
A built-in apron runs across the front of these basic tubs, while you surround the tub on the other three sides by alcove walls. The installation of apron-style tubs involves less work and materials than an island-style bathtub.
How to install a bathtub on an existing floor?
Use wide spacers and nail or glue them into place at the leg locations so they won’t shift when the tub goes in. On larger tubs, the manufacturer may ask you to set the tub in a wet mortar bed, which will mold to the tub bottom and provide extra support. At this point, note how the apron (outer edge) of your new tub meets the existing floor.
How do you install a drain shoe on a bathtub?
Before installing the tub, add the new drain shoe while it’s still easy to get at (Figure B). Lay a thick ring of clear silicone caulk under the rim, and screw it together following the tub manufacturer’s instructions. Then install the bathtub and anchor it to the wall studs as recommended by the manufacturer.
Can you put a tub surround on tile?
Tub surrounds aren’t meant to be installed on tile. Most of the time, water will leak between the surround and tile. To avoid this, install the surround over drywall, wood, or concrete walls rather than on top of existing surrounds or tiles.
