There are two main ways a colostomy can be formed: To form a loop colostomy, a loop of colon is pulled out through an incision in your abdomen. This section of colon is opened up and stitched to the skin to form an opening called a stoma. The stoma will have two openings, but they will be close together and you may not be able to see both.

What is the difference between a stoma bag and a colostomy bag?
The bowel may have to be rerouted through an artificially created hole (stoma) in the abdomen so that faeces can still leave the body. Procedure overview
A colostomy is an operation that creates an opening for the colon, or large intestine, through the abdomen. A colostomy may be temporary or permanent. It is usually done after bowel surgery or injury. Most permanent colostomies are "end colostomies," while many temporary colostomies bring the side of the colon up to an opening in the abdomen.
Reasons for the procedure
Colostomy surgery may be needed to treat several different diseases and conditions. These include:
How the digestive system works
A colostomy won't change the way your digestive system works. Normally, after you chew and swallow your food, it goes through your esophagus, or swallowing tube, into your stomach.
Risks of the procedure
Getting a colostomy marks a big change in your life, but the surgery itself is uncomplicated. It will be performed under general anesthesia, so you will be unconscious and feel no pain. A colostomy may be done as open surgery, or laparoscopically, via several tiny cuts.
Before the procedure
If possible, be sure to discuss your surgical and postsurgical options with a doctor and an ostomy nurse (a nurse who is specially trained to help colostomy patients) before surgery. It may also help to meet with an ostomy visitor. This is a volunteer who has had a colostomy and can help you understand how to live with one.
During the procedure
Depending on why you need a colostomy, it will be made in one of 4 parts of the colon: ascending, transverse, descending, or sigmoid.
After the procedure
You may be able to suck on ice chips on the same day as your surgery. You'll probably be given clear fluids the next day. Some people eat normally within two days after a colostomy.
Protecting the skin around the stoma
The skin around your stoma should always look the same as skin anywhere else on your abdomen. But ostomy output can make this skin tender or sore. Here are some ways to help keep your skin healthy:
Colostomy irrigation (for descending and sigmoid colostomies only)
Colostomy irrigation is something that can be done with certain types of colostomies to help move stool through the colon. If you have a descending or sigmoid colostomy, you may choose to manage your colostomy with irrigation. Irrigation is simply putting water into the colon through the stoma to help regulate bowel movements.
If you choose to irrigate
Choose a time in the day when you know you’ll have the bathroom to yourself.
Emptying and changing the pouching system
You’ll be taught how to change and empty your pouching system before you leave the hospital. You don’t have to use sterile supplies. For instance, facial tissue, toilet paper, or paper towels can be used to clean around the stoma instead of sterile gauze pads.
Bathing
Water will not hurt your ostomy. Normal exposure to air or contact with soap and water won’t harm the stoma. Water will not flow into the stoma. Soap will not irritate it, but soap may interfere with the skin barrier sticking to the skin. It’s best to only use water while cleaning the skin around your stoma.
Spots of blood on the stoma
Spots of blood are not a cause for alarm. Cleaning around the stoma as you change the pouch or skin barrier may cause slight bleeding. The blood vessels in the tissues of the stoma are very delicate at the surface and are easily disturbed. The bleeding will usually stop quickly. If it doesn’t, call your ostomy nurse or your doctor.
Shaving hair under the pouch
Having a lot of hair around the stoma can make it hard to get the skin barrier to stick well and may cause pain when you remove it. Shaving with a razor or trimming hair with scissors is helpful. Extra care should always be taken when doing this.
An Intro to Colostomy Irrigation
Colostomy irrigation is an effective way to help you empty your colon on a schedule. By pouring water through the stoma and into your colon, you can flush your colon out.
When is the Best Time?
According to a survey, 30% of people complete a colostomy irrigation every one to three days.
Required Supplies
Before your first irrigation, make sure you have the proper supplies. Your ostomy irrigation supplies should include:

By following this step-by-step colostomy irrigation guide, you can maintain your health and regular bowel movements. Make sure you have all the supplies you need before you start, and don't rush! Instead, take your time and keep your comfort in mind.
What is colostomy care?
Colostomy care is how to change, empty, or clean your pouch system. You and your family will be taught colostomy care before you leave the hospital.
How do I change my pouch system?
How you change your pouch system depends on the type you have. Your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions on how to change your system. The following is general information about how to change it:
How do I care for my skin?
Look at the skin around your stoma each time you change your pouch system. Your stoma should be pink or red and moist. You may have a small amount of bleeding when you clean your stoma. This is normal. Your stoma will get smaller and become its normal size in about 8 weeks.
What types of foods can I eat after a colostomy?
Eat a variety of healthy foods. Healthy foods include fruits, vegetables, whole-grain breads, low-fat dairy products, and lean meats. Do not eat foods that give you cramps or diarrhea.

Overview
During a partial colectomy, a surgeon removes the diseased portion of your colon and a small portion of surrounding healthy tissue. The surgeon may join the cut ends of the colon so that waste leaves your body normally.
Why it's done
The colon, also called the large intestine, is a long, tube-like organ in your abdomen. The colon carries waste to be expelled from the body.
Risks
Colectomy carries a risk of serious complications. Your risk of complications is based on your general health, the type of colectomy you undergo and the approach your surgeon uses to perform the operation.
How you prepare
During the days leading up to your colon surgery, your doctor may ask that you:
What you can expect
A colectomy procedure to remove one side of the colon is called hemicolectomy. A right hemicolectomy, as shown here, involves removing the right side of the colon and attaching the small intestine to the remaining portion of the colon.
