How to make a ric rac trimmed deluxe fleece blanket

For a 2 yard blanket, I used 3 packages of jumbo ric rac (2.5 yards per package). You want to use thread that matches the ricrac for the top thread in your machine; for the bobbin thread you can match the fabric, although since the Luxe fleece is so dense the thread on the back is not very visible.

How to make a bias bound deluxe fleece blanket

For a bias bound blanket, you’ll want 3 packages of extra wide double fold bias tape (3 yards per package). OR you can make your own bias tape. Each fold of the bias tape should be 1/2 inch wide. For this blanket, you’ll want thread that matches your bias tape in both the top and bobbin.

How to make a pom pom trimmed deluxe fleece blanket

Ok, now for my favorite one: the pom pom trimmed fleece blanket. This blanket is the most expensive one, seeing as you need 7 yards of pom pom trim. Using 50% off coupons for both the trim and fabric, the total cost on this blanket was $30, but I think it was worth every penny.

No Sew Fleece Blankets Make Great Gifts

What Kind of Fleece Should I Use?

I generally buy fleece from Jo-Ann, and they sell three different types: Blizzard Fleece, Anti-Pill Fleece, and Luxe Fleece. Luxe fleece is gorgeous, but it’s too heavy to use for a doubly layer no sew fleece blanket. For these blankets I recommend using Anti-Pill Fleece. Here’s why:

How Much Fabric Will I Need?

You can make fleece blankets in any size you’d like. For a baby blanket, plan to purchase a yard of each fabric you’d like to use. For a blanket that’s a good size for kids, you’ll need one and a half yards of fabric (2 pieces, 1.5 yards each = three yards total).

Buy Fleece on Sale

DO NOT buy fleece at Jo-Ann at full price! Fleece goes on sale regularly (60%-70% off) especially during the fall and winter months, so it’s worth waiting for a sale. For a child size blanket, when Blizzard fleece is on sale you’ll be able to get both pieces of fleece for about $10. For the same size blanket, Anti-Pill Fleece will be closer to $20.

Getting Started: Cut Straight Edges

To begin making your blanket, you’ll need to even up the edges of your fabric. Lay the piece of fabric that will be the back of your blanket down on a flat surface, like the floor, with the right side (front side) of the fabric down. The right side of Anti Pill Fleece is the fuzzier side, or the side that the print looks more clear on.

Trim and Fold the Fabric

Trim off the selvage edge of the fabric, cutting as straight as possible. Using rotary cutting tools can be helpful to achieve a smooth edge.

Round the Corners

Mark a rounded edge on the corners of the fabric by using a rounded item as a template, such as a dinner plate or an embroidery hoop.

Stitch the Edges (Optional)

Fleece fabric doesn't fray, so an edge finish isn't essential. But it does help the blanket hold its shape on the edges, and it's visually appealing. If you don't sew the edges you might find that the fleece eventually stretches or forms a fluted edge.
